As another multilingual person, I keep getting reminded how bad software "features" can be for us. First, from early computers up to at least the Windows XP era, things sucked due to code pages and all that, but that was understandable, technical limitations after all. Now things suck due to what's supposed to be convenient UX.

Google Chrome broke Ctrl-F functionality for my native language ages ago and it's still broken because the breakage is apparently by design.

The Amazon website for my country appears to mostly auto-translate the English product pages into the local language. Product titles sometimes mean totally ridiculous things because of course the translation is poor.

Nobody cares about the Accept-Language header. Way too many websites like to use GeoIP and switch to the local language. Sometimes the geolocation is wrong, sometimes their location-language mappings are, and even when everything is working "correctly" it's a pain if I'm traveling. I have my browser set up with a correct Accept-Language list, but during travel I definitely see websites switch to a language I can't read.

Then of course there's the huge problem, related to autodetection, that you cannot deduce a user's language from their residence. Countries don't have a surjective mapping onto languages.

Why is ctrl-f broken?

This is (largely) what I have for my "dumb" washer. What makes mine unique is the washer is in my apartment building's cellar, too far for Wifi. So I have a LoRa transmitter that routes the message to a LoRa receiver on my home network.

Unfortunately, as you noted, I haven't figured out how to handle the dryer as the load is too much for all the smart plugs I've found. I wish there was a clamp-style monitor on an extension cord, but it seems that is something which doesn't exist.

Thankfully, the dryer isn't as much of an issue since dry clothes can sit there until I remember to get them.

You can use a vibration sensor for the dryer.

It's actually really, really easy to get the state of a "dumb" washing machine (or any other electric machine) into Home Assistant using a smart plug. You can use something really basic like "power draw for > n seconds followed by no power for > m seconds" to detect when a cycle is finished. You can get way fancier and look at power draw curves to determine what part of a cycle it's in, or which cycle, if you really want to. You can add a door sensor (recommend Samsung) if you want to know if the door's been opened.

Unfortunately it's much harder to do the same for an electric dryer, since there's no inexpensive or good smart plugs for 240V last I checked.

Compatible releases should replace older versions.

Why would you want to install an old version of ruff?

I'm against lead but I'm curious why people don't complain about brass?

So, i have a house in Haliburton Ontario. Historically we drop a cool $3k a year on propane.

Last year we installed a Mitsubishi hyper heat ductless system.

We used zero gas this year. Read it again, zero.

It’s lakefront, very remote, and the largest electricity bill i got was around $450 for a month and then they dropped back to something more like $250. The savings are huge, I’m no longer stressed about running out of gas…and the heat pump performed well beyond its advertised specifications. We had a few -25C days and it was humming hard, but the house stayed a comfortable 20C inside. The house is around 3000sqft and we didn’t even get the largest unit, i can’t stress enough that they actually operate better than advertised.

We would run a fire from time to time but we did that with propane too, it’s mostly ornamental.

That's a lot of lines going to the outdoor unit.

Is there two per indoor head?
