> I imagine soon you'll be able to ask it what the world is talking about today and get some interesting responses.

You'll get exactly what Elon wants it to say.

It's actually the opposite. I asked about some details in the current ukraine situation, and it stated mostly facts with a few words critical of Trump. This is about neutral. But it showed pretty strong Keynesian tendency when I asked it about some economic policy issues earlier.

Dead Comment

Don't take this as a pro-Musk or anti-Musk comment. I just want to paraphrase his reasoning:

In a recent interview on Lex Fridman, he envisioned a future where humans augmented AI, through a brain to computer device like Neuralink would be able to keep up with pure AI.

Now one can immediately notice a hole in this reasoning: namely what guarantees that the AI that is use to augment humans is going to be benevolent and won't go rogue?

Palpatineli · a year ago
Nothing guarantees that. But in this augmentations scenario human brain is necessary, unlike in the many extinction scenarios with pure silicon AGI take off.

His books certainly belong those where “I would love to see this as a movie but I know I would hate the movie and be disappointed”.

Some stories probably can only be told properly in written words, and that’s ok.

By Vinge's prophecy we will have AGI between this year and 2030, which means you can have perfect stable diffusion for movies before you retire, and you can tweak your movie for the book to your hearts content.

Was Marx wrong?
Palpatineli · 2 years ago
Yes because AGI would invalidate the entirety of das Kapital.

The thing is, they could have just come out with that fact and everyone in the alignment camp and people who memed the whole super-commercialized "Open" AI thing would be on their side. But the fact that they haven't means that either there was no greater-good mission related reason for ousting Sam or the board is just completely incompetent at communication. Either way, they need to go and make room for people who can actually deal with this stuff. OpenAI is doomed with their current board.
Palpatineli · 2 years ago
Telling people that AGI is acheivable with current LLM with minor tricks may be very dangerous in itself.

The fact that these people aren't currently willing to "rewind the clock" about a week shows the dangers of human ego. Nothing permanent has been done that can't be undone fairly simply, if all parties agree to undo it. What we're watching now is the effect of ego momentum on decision making.

Try it. It's not a crazy idea. Put everything back the way it was a week ago and then agree to move forward. It will be like having knowledge of the future, with only a small amount of residual consequences. But if they can do it, it will show a huge evolutionary leap forward in ability of organizations to self-correct.

THe orignal track is the dangerous one. That was the whole point of the coup. It makes zero sense to go back.

If commercial satellites can pick up individual cellphone signals and receive them with no modifications, the military would have this tech for years?

Just listening on where devices are currently and the signal power strength (must be higher while calling/transmitting data) could be a major source of signal intelligence.

Palpatineli · 2 years ago
Not necessarily, starlink satellite and receiver are the cutting edge technology. Raytheon may have this technology years ago in their skunkwork equivalent but the military never formally bought anything like that.

What’s the difference between this and https://lynk.world/ or AST?
Palpatineli · 2 years ago
AST has one very large satellite, so it supports higher bandwidth for each device, giving them 18Mbps speed. Starlink satellites, even with gen 2, are smaller but more numerous. So while AST may support 40 simultanuous callers and sell the service to 40000 customers, starlink direct to cell gives you lower bandwidth but can support 40000 simulatnuous callers and sell to 4M people. (numbers are my best guesses)
