> The only way to stop this from happening is half the country refuse to buy any tech that implements OS age verification

No, the way to stop it is to talk to your representatives.

You have the power. You just have to pick up a phone, and ask your friends, relatives, neighbors, to do the same. (They will, because it affects all of them.) Tell your reps to remove the legislation or you're voting them out. They don't want to lose their jobs. They will change if you tell them to. But only if you tell them. That is your power. Use it or lose it.

I hate to be negative here but every single time I have spoken with a representative, they will just take the party line. "Thank you for reaching out. We are doing X as advised by the department of Y based on our evidence of Z."

Then they just continue with that was already happening.

Why did Tesla work initially? Because they were first to market and people were willing to overlook flaws?

When did it start falling apart?

Why hasn't the same happened to SpaceX? (Gov contracts, too big to fail, national defense, no competition yet, etc.?)

And honestly, why hasn't anyone domestically put up a decent fight against Tesla? Best I can think of is Rivian, and those have their own issues.

HerbManic · a day ago
It always seems to be companies that Musk has more impulsive interactions with that seem to end up actioning both the good and the bad ideas. Twitter and Tesla being examples of this. It seems like SpaceXs longer term goals has worked out well for them.

So the RAM prices are going to skyrocket again?
HerbManic · a day ago
Of course, everything at the moment regardless of good or bad means higher RAM price.

SpacemiT K3 is on par with Rockchip RK3588. So, about 4 years behind ARM.

Tenstorrent Atlantis (first Ascalon silicon) should ship in Q2/Q3 and be twice as fast. About as fast as Ryzen5. So, about 5 years behind AMD.

But even the K3 has faster AI than Apple Silicon or Qualcomm X Elite.

Current trend-lines suggest ARM64 and RISC-V performance parity before 2030.

I love the optimisim, but I do thimk your time line is little quick. It will be more like 10 years than 4.

Convenient and Cheap. That's all most people care about.

Privacy was already lost when everyone adopted mobile phones and gave them everything with constant location tracking, and used the free email accounts.

It's interesting that age-verification is the straw that breaks the camels back, but I guess porn has that power.

Yeo, convenience is the most powerful "drug" we have ever come up with. We need our next hit... Now!

One of my favorite quotes: “There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies.”

I think about this a lot because it’s true of any complex system or argument, not just software.

One of the policies of The Rhinoceros Party in Canada was to increase the complexity of the taxation system so much that nobody could find the loopholes to exploit.

The improvements in fruit over the years has improved my quality of life so much. If you have never tried a sumo citrus, I recommend it -- they are only in season till April iirc.

Benefits of sumo citrus: Easy to peel Pith does not remain attached to orange Super juicy Excellent taste and texture, balanced acid and sugar levels.

It's my understanding that if you look at a large enough historical time window, although warming has accelerated recently (and we are in part to blame); the Earth is still relatively cool compared to historical averages.
HerbManic · 8 days ago
That is very true, but the issue really is the speed of change not the total amount of it. If we were to raise 2c over 10,000 years, that would be a non issue for the most part, adaption time would be so slow that many civilisations will come and fall between then. That it is happening over a hundred or so years, that is a huge whip lash and thats where the problem lay. We built a large but somewhat fragil industrial system assuming continued stability. Dumping 2 trillion tons of CO2 into an already barely stable system will not go down as the brightest idea we have had.

If you go from the top of a building to the bottom, it isnt the height that is the issue but the speed of change. You take the lift, not jump of the side of the building.

Nothing brings home the Orwellian nature of USA 2026 more for me than the word "warfighter".
HerbManic · 9 days ago
Everytime I hear 'Department of War', it just saddens me. Warfighter is the same.

"When the way prevails in the empire, fleet-footed horses are relegated to ploughing the fields; when the way does not prevail in the empire, war-horses breed on the border." Tao Te Ching chapter 46.

>For instance my bank has become entirely dependent of their app as the glue between all their functions and authorisation

That sounds horrible. What are users to do if their smartphone breaks?

HerbManic · 9 days ago
In my case a few weeks back when my phone failed, it meant no access over the weekend until I could get a very lengthy phone call to reinstate app access on a new phone.
