communism, because when everyone's basic needs are guaranteed they have the mental/physical bandwidth to be innovators, and without commodity fetishism, scientific advancements can be made for the sake of responding to human needs, rather than facilitating the creation of products

History says that while the idea may have merit, the implementation has been poor, tragic even.

That study was specifically on Australian firemen IIRC. Firemen are exposed to more of those particular chemicals because of their widespread use in flame retardant sprays.

When I lived in LA I went to a beach dodgeball meetup organized by Herbalife MLM "health coaches". It was actually a rather positive experience. I biked out three mornings a week for many months, and played dodgeball and then did high intensity exercises in the sand. Afterward I would go to their gym and pay $5 for a protein shake, and socialize with an eclectic bunch of people completely unlike me. I lost 40lb, could do 100 pull ups, and I could buy the outfit off a dummy at Macy's and look good.

One girl had "dibs" on me regarding the MLM scheme. She eventually got a bit irritated that I never signed up, but I still managed to integrate myself into their social circle for a good while. I even went to one of their conferences, just out of curiosity.

A good number of the people I met were actually quite interesting, but had some unsatisfied aspect of their life. The combination of community and intense exercise was healthy for them, even if they were spending their time futilely trying to sell supplements.

Man, I have been approached by guys like this, we have a good conversation, then they try to sell me something. The last few times someone has struck up a conversation with me out of nowhere it was to try and sell me something. I go to the gym every other day during lunch. Been doing it for years. Literally the only people that have ever talked to me were these MLM bros.

It made me feel profoundly sad the last time it happened. I don't know why really, but the fact that no one would ever talk to me unless they wanted to sell me something was just a hard thing to take.

So hearing that you hung out with these guys on purpose is fascinating to me. It all seems so contrived and artificial, but it seems you got something out of it at least. Did you end up making any real connections?

Since my experience feeling sad though I have tried to say hi and strike up conversations with strangers when it feels appropriate. People may be put off by it occasionally, but it's nice to connect with people, even if it's only briefly.

AI is a ratchet. It doesn't die, or retire, or change careers. Once it's good at something, it stays good. Once it gets better at something, it stays better. (If not, the model is disposed of without pity or remorse.) Right now, it may make you better at your job. But your very use of it is training it to do your job.

It seems to me that if AI is currently helpful to you, it is likely to eventually replace you. And me, and perhaps most skilled jobs as they exist today. It won't be instant, but if you are early- or mid-career, take it very seriously.

What does "take it seriously" mean? For me, taking it seriously means that I am trying to use it as multiplier to be better at my own job. Is there some better course of action you think we should be taking? I personally do not think it is going anywhere, so I figure I had better be the expert.

In Schmidt’s first tv interview on Bitcoin he also said concern over unchecked criminality was overblown.

He suggested that criminals make enough opsec mistakes that would be recorded that the government need not be worried.

Which has mostly been born out, at least about criminals making opsec mistakes.

I think you are missing the point. People are not skinny because they "intellectually" know something. Nor are people fat because they are stupid, sometimes sure, but the societal trend towards obesity is not caused by ignorance. Read the article.

All of this poignant reminiscing reminds me of action buttons, aka Tim Rogers, latest review on YouTube. If you like games he puts out some of the best content around. If you aren't, skip to part five of the review to hear the part that this reminded me of.

Part five is a wonderful video essay on memory, nostalgia and regret. Tim is also in a unique position to talk about this as he has a condition where he never forgets anything. It's really a fascinating video.

Also general shout out to action button, all the videos are fantastic.

Speaking as someone who came from PE, agree that higher rate environment means both better investment alternatives and also more expensive capital for LBOs. That said, the firms with fresh capital can make a ton of money buying into this environment. Zendesk being a great first example. Not a huge amount of debt required to do these types of deals. Liquidity going to hide under the figurative rock of fixed income means values get dragged down, which creates an incredible buying opportunity for all these PE funds. Look 5-7 years out, I'd guess 2022 and 2023 vintage funds will be some of the best in history.
