The USB 2.0 should be the one on the back, so the charging cable does not interfere with me plugging and unplugging things from the good port.
Foivos · 9 days ago
Unless you use a dock, where you plug your things in the dock. Then you would want the "good" one to be the one of the back so it looks more clean and also have easier access to the slow port in the rare case you want to plug something there instead of the fast dock.

At least we should both be happy that it exists, no matter where it is placed! This is a big improvement over the macbook 12 with just one port. This was too low even when using a dock.

My only real issue with this design is as far as I can tell there is no markings on exterior explaining which USB-C port is "the good one" - an important point given one port is dramatically slower than the other.

I suspect many users will probably accidentally plug stuff like external SSDs into the slow port without realizing. It's maybe too much to hope for at this price point, but would have been nice for a machine with only two ports to be able to offer the same spec USB on both ports.

My instinct would be to use the socket towards the rear of the machine as my charging port - it's closest to the corner - but in doing so you use up the "good" USB-3 port leaving you with only USB2. It's not a huge deal, but charging in the other port to free up the USB3 one feels slightly weird to me. I suspect most users will charge off the USB3 port given its location.

Reading the spec sheet, it also looks like DisplayPort is only supported over the USB3 port too - again there appears no way to know just by looking at the ports. This has never been a problem on any of the Apple Silicon 2-port MacBook Airs, as those have always had the same specs on both ports and could drive a display over DisplayPort from either.

My guess is that if you plug a fast medium on the slow USB port the OS will give you a pop up letting you know. I have seen something similar in windows 11.

The biggest disappointment in my 30 years of adulting has been how much absolute, shameless incompetence is out there in the workforce. When I was a kid, I naively thought that adults were smart and knew what they are doing. Then I got into industry and saw so many people just outright bluffing for 8 hours a day before going home, day in and day out.

It's amazing that society even functions at all.

in europe there is a social stigma around GLP-1 drugs, a lot of people considered it cheating and lazy, so a lot of people don't dare talk about their usage
Foivos · 2 months ago
The social stigma in Europe exists, because these drugs are in limited supply. So, if a person who does not really need them is using them, the people who actually need them to stay alive might have difficulty accessing them.

You can sign up for Apple beta and keep doing iOS 18 updates.
Foivos · 2 months ago
There are many reports that since around Christmas day, you can not do this any more on phones that support iOS 26. Updating to iOS 26 is the only option now.

I thought it is very easy to burn and SD card. Since when can you use it as storage expansion?

So not Netflix, but Twitch?

Plenty of people stream commentary to matches without showing the game itself, so that would flag as guilty too

Foivos · 6 months ago
These are not peer to peer connections. These people would send a single stream to twitch and then twitch, a known streaming service, would stream it to their viewers.

In theory someone might rent a server and do the streaming directly to his viewers, without using a known platform. This would be a legitimate false positive as you describe. But this would be so expensive I doubt anyone would do it when the alternative is a free platform with built in community and monetisation tools.

Wouldn't the traffic pattern be similar to watching Netflix?
Foivos · 6 months ago
I think live video has a bit different pattern than video on demand.

But aside from it, it should be very obvious: A) you are notified by the intellectual property holders that somebody is streaming pirated content, B) a specific customer or set of customers, who are not a known streaming service, are serving tens or hundrends of IPs with video and C) these customers do not have much activity during other times.

As I understand it, the only organisation that can block the streaming websites without collateral damage is Cloudflare, and they have not chosen to do so.

The situation is a bit irregular, as the streaming providers set up a new website for each game, and the legal system isn't fast-moving enough to issue a court order banning a website within the 90 minutes of a football game. Instead La Liga got a 'dynamic blocking injunction' so they tell ISPs what to block, and ISPs have to block it.

Foivos · 6 months ago
I imagined a solution where authorities would notify the hosting company of the IPs that are streaming. It should be obvious for the hosting company which customer is using these IPs for streaming illegal content just by studying the traffic pattern, no need to actually look inside the packets.

Then they can just ban this customer. That way the authorities will not have a reason to ban IP ranges affecting the other customers.

Can the service providers somehow block illegal streaming themselves? That way no third party services would be affected?
