Who would use Preview products in production? I'm building out some software that would fit perfectly into the constraints set for DSQL, but I realistically can't commit to something with no pricing / guarantees.

EwanToo commented on Huawei unveils laptop running self-developed HarmonyOS as Windows licence expire   scmp.com/tech/big-tech/ar... · Posted by u/ksec

I'm confused by the premise here, as repeated in the title and initial sentence:

Huawei Technologies on Thursday unveiled its first laptop that runs the company’s self-developed operating system, HarmonyOS, following the expiration of its Microsoft Windows license for personal computers (PCs) in March.

What kind of Windows license are we talking about here? I understood that Huawei is a hardware manufacturer. Any Windows license on a laptop they deliver would be an OEM license attached to the device, right? Are they saying that Huawei lost its contract to sell Windows OEM licenses with the devices it manufactures?

Is that a thing? Does Microsoft say to hardware makers that no, you cannot sell your hardware with Windows? What kind of dispute between Microsoft and Huawei leads to that outcome?

You need a license from Microsoft to resell Windows licenses as an OEM.

US sanctions against Huawei mean that they can't sign a renewal.

I mean, I haven't been a subscriber for a couple years but are they losing a lot of subscribers?

https://backlinko.com/netflix-users

I see some slowing growth particularly across 2021/2022 but as of this report (April 2024) they were still growing through 2023.

260M subscribers. They aren't exactly hurting.

It's now over 300 million subscribers, as you say they're doing OK.

Egress charges for migrations hasn't been a problem since 2024 March.

from https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/free-data-transfer-out-to-i...

We believe this choice must include the one to migrate your data to another cloud provider or on-premises. That’s why, starting today, we’re waiving data transfer out to the internet (DTO) charges when you want to move outside of AWS.

If you need more than 100 gigabytes of data transfer out per month while transitioning, you can contact AWS Support to ask for free DTO rates for the additional data. It’s necessary to go through support because you make hundreds of millions of data transfers each day, and we generally do not know if the data transferred out to the internet is a normal part of your business or a one-time transfer as part of a switch to another cloud provider or on premises.

We will review requests at the AWS account level. Once approved, we will provide credits for the data being migrated. We don’t require you to close your account or change your relationship with AWS in any way. You’re welcome to come back at any time. We will, of course, apply additional scrutiny if the same AWS account applies multiple times for free DTO.

If you request this, AWS requires:

"After your move away from AWS services, within the 60-day period, you must delete all remaining data and workloads from your AWS account, or you can close your AWS account."

So egress charges are still a significant problem.
