I must be in the minority because I actually kinda like liquid glass. I find the effect tasteful.

I'm newer to iOS (first iPhone was 15 pro) and macOS (M2 Air) so have tried to keep an open mind - only excessively irritating bugs will get me back to android and windows, as the back and forth transition is a soft barrier.

So far, accessing Safari tabs to close takes an extra tap, but that's counteracted somewhat by the New tab / private tab options. And keyboard doesn't pop up consistently when replying to emails in Outlook. Might be related to SwiftKey or just a bug in that app. Aside from that I'm pretty happy with the ux.

Second hand as in used from this generation? Or second generation? I can't wait for windows on arm to finally fully get there.

I'd rather go into a testing center and use someone else's device than infect my own system with whatever spyware they'll insist students install to try and prevent cheaters.

> try and prevent

Yeah, good luck with that. If there's one thing remote teaching during covid taught me it's that you can't stop someone from cheating during an online assessment.

Really love the pace of Apple innovations. Nowadays, I am biased towards battery and weight (MacBook Air) if it is for portability and the other line of notebooks are converted into desktops via TB exactly because of weight and battery life. I feel the difference in battery use from one to the other. The Air seems like it has "infinite battery" evn when the others use Mx processors.

Also waiting for a great Linux port battery/weight wise.

I was seriously considering an m3 pro for the space black color until I confirmed it wasn't passively cooled. An extra monitor would be nice at work but the air is just too great as a laptop.
Eldandan commented on iPhone 15: users of Pro and Pro Max models complain of overheating issues   theguardian.com/technolog... · Posted by u/beardyw

I have a FineWoven case on my 15 Pro Max and, just adding to the anecdata here, have not had a single thermal issue. The only time it warmed up was during the initial data transfer. I'm pushing the phone with a lot of cinematic video recording, etc – remarkably cool.

I watched this story blossom out of a few social accounts I had to mute because it started to feel like they really wanted to get likes on 'iPhone 15 Pro Max is a disaster' type posts.

That's the tricky thing about the information environment we're in. A real issue affecting people? Or a non-issue that's being boosted and then picked up into a bigger story. Devices sometimes have issues – not debating that. Just saying, I feel like there's been very little skepticism applied here.

Eldandan · 2 years ago
Same here. 15 pro max and all is smooth sailing. Worst I had it was tethered to a laptop running zoom and a pc running another zoom with the phone charging. It had to stop charging at 80% for thermal protection.

When the biggest complaints about a device are like this I feel good about the purchase.

I was wondering the same thing. This is the first time I'm hearing of lint-inside-port situation. Was I living under a rock?!

This has never been a problem for me for both USB-C or lightning ports. But apparently — judging by comments here — this is a common complaint.

About the ports themselves I don't care either way. I have no strong opinions about USB-C or lightning.

Eldandan · 2 years ago
You and I have been living under a lint-free rock, apparently.

This has barely ever tipped the needle for me when deciding to buy a phone. I switched to a Pixel a couple of years ago for two main features:

Call Screening - https://support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/9118387?hl=en

Hold for me - https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/10071878?hl=en

They're immensely valuable and I feel Apple is absolutely dumb for having equivalents baked in already. If they did, I'd happily switch over.

Eldandan · 2 years ago
I just switched over to IPhone after a solid three years on a Pixel 4a 5g and am having some adjustment pains with iOS related to lack of these features. Live transcription is another super useful feature I truly value during long, annoying calls with call menu options (IRS, hospitals, etc), since it is so helpful to see what the previous options were without having to listen to the entire damn menu again.

Then there are small annoyances like not having the option to enable auto-space after punctuation like commas and periods in messages, even with third-party keyboards like swift keybaord. And not being able to set a separate ringer and alarm volume. I keep my ringer volume very low during the day, but I depend on a loud alarm. Got to work late today as a consequence of this!

I'm already considering switching back to pixel 8 once it releases next month, especially due to the increased support. Only thing holding me back is tensor chips not yet being on par until around 2025 when Google releases its first fully custom chip.

Yeah, but not until 2027 or so it seems, and then you’ll have to drag around an ic engine as well. Seems a bit of a waste for a car with that much battery range.

My dad just bought the bZ4x, I’m not particularly impressed, but that’s just my opinion. My dad likes it, mainly because he wasn’t comfortable using the touch screen while driving to adjust things like windshield wipers etc, which I think is a good decision for him. But what poor marketing department came up with an unpronounceable name like that.

Eldandan · 3 years ago
Ah, yes, the renowned bz4x, or busy forks for the initiated.

If you've actually driven an EV, you realize mileage is a crock of shit so getting 700 miles actually means you can not worry.

* You can't use the bottom 10% without going against recommendations

* You shouldn't charge above 85-90% to avoid going against recommendations

* If you drive over 65 mph, the drain is above average.

* If you tow a trailer, your range is halved.

* If you install a little storage roof rack, you lose 20-30% of range

* You experience 10% battery degradation in the first couple years of ownership.

* 20% loss to cold weather (Thanks to a comment for this one)

I really don't want a reply to this comment to be "Well...gas engines..."

Eldandan · 3 years ago
Everything here is accurate. I still chose an EV because I can deal with the caveats, but this helps clarify to me why others wouldn't want to bother. This doesn't even mention access to charging; much easier for homeowners to justify an EV.

One thing though:

> You shouldn't charge above 85-90% to avoid going against recommendations

Daily driving this doesn't matter much. Longer drives you can charge to 100% as long as you depart within a reasonable time frame of say within 6 hours, probably longer. More annoying is the charging curve after 80% at fast charging stations. In my experience you usually won't want to spend the time to get that last 20% unless absolutely necessary.

>walled garden

This is a marketing phrase that twists a negative into a positive. Its better to use more objective terms. Gardens give you a perceptions of flowers and fruits.

Eldandan · 3 years ago
I like walled garden. Everything appears nice and flowery except for the fact they want to hold you in. You can admire its beauty but can't really trust anything in it due to its darker purpose. Reminds me of the Stepford Wives.

What is that called, an ironic phrase?
