Dennip commented on iOS 27 'Rave' Update to Clean Up Code, Could Boost Battery Life   macrumors.com/2026/02/16/... · Posted by u/tosh

There are SO many fundamentally bad/broken design decisions in iOS now, from simply infuriating to use elements to downright broken ones.

The amount of times the keyboard just blocks some button, a setting is nested 5/6 menus deep, things that used to be slick no longer just work.

I set alarms on my iPad sometimes, theres a floating popup, you can't dismiss it by clicking away like you would expect, you have to click the x, [image](https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/set-an-alarm-ipadec8a36...)

I wish there was a "power user" mode in Windows that you could activate and you'd get the ability to have classic themes (my MS themselves), classic Control Panel, no constant nudging, no weather/Xbox/Solitaire apps, etc...

THe settings siutation is so annoying, there are still so many options locked away inside control panel and the new settings app has a few that dont exist in control panel, its so fragmented.
Dennip commented on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure   rosalux.de/en/news/id/539... · Posted by u/robtherobber

It implies railways were les safe post privatisation. This is misleading. There were more accidents and deaths, but that was because of a huge increase in miles travelled. Deaths per billion kilometers fell consistently before and after privatisation.

A lot of the problems lie in tracks and their maintenance, and the tracks were re-nationalised many years ago. It is not efficiently run (see HS2!).

They are expensive, but that is partly because rail workers are well paid. Train drivers can be paid as much as aircraft pilots. Their ability and willingness to strike affects both costs and people's willingness to rely on public transport.

The big constraint is lack of subsidies. it probably makes little difference whether the system is privately owned but tightly regulated, or publicly owned so much as willingness to subsidise it. This is also shown by the failure of franchises taken back into public ownership to improve.

Something you are not accounting for is that rolling stock is fully private still, and a huge huge chunk of the profits. Operators don't make much money, the govt owns and runs the rails themselves, but the rollling stock is where a lot of the money goes

>selling to one of the hardest segments (developers who are notoriously frugal).

But they don't sell to developers, they sell to suits high in the food chain of a corporation.

TBH even that can be a hard sell at times

> I was paying $10/month for workplace and a couple days ago they froze my account because I was accessing it via IMAP.

I used to pay for Workspace and left because a good chunk of features across all Google products simply didn't work with Workspace accounts, or were held back for a year or more after free Google accounts got them. It's a mess. Then they kept increasing the price for good measure, and there's no off-ramp, if you stop paying then the account is left in a zombie state with even less functionality than a free one until you start paying again.

Do yourself a favour and use Fastmail or Proton or anything else for your vanity domain instead.

This is a super annoying quirk, lots of things don't work well if you're using workspace as a normal gmail account, and they don't quite warn you up front.

Only slightly off topic but I sincerely wish Noctua was everywhere else in my life.

Like I’d love for them to make my HVAC system quieter.

Or table fans. Or car air conditioners.

Just about every fan in my life would be better if Noctua redesigned it.

They’d be like Dolby, but for making LESS noise.

You dont even notice it at first, but when I started wearing airpods pro at work, the NOISE of the aircon etc when you have to take them out is wild.

I have terabytes of iphone photos/videos accumulated over the years. Apple Photos app is trash when it comes to handling large libraries so I’ve been splitting them by year which is fine for archiving but horrible for actually browsing photos.

Immich has been absolutely awesome for this — I can finally look at all my pictures from any year from anywhere in the world. I’m very happy and hope the creators find a way to sustainably finance the project.

The upload feature in the mobile app is not a 1 to 1 replacement of apple photos import so i still do that via apple photos, but that’s something I can live with.

For a while I was running a windows VM with the iCloud for windows utility that syncs your photos to a folder on your windows PC, iirc it worker reasonably well as an 'automated' sync solution. (under the surface the folder was a share on my NAS, which in turn fed into a separate immich instance)
