One of the few unqualified improvements that “X” (aka Twitter) made was rendering the usernames in a font that has wings for the lowercase L

I had always wondered if that happened because of a proliferation in folks named EionMusk.

It also buffers the downloaded data completely into memory last time I checked. So downloading a file bigger than the available RAM just doesn't work and you have to use WebClient instead.

Another fun one is Extract-Archive which is painfully slow while using the System.IO.Compression.ZipFile CLR type directly is reasonably fast. Powershell is really a head scratcher sometimes.

tar.exe, however, beats both of those in terms of archive format support and speed.

windows terminal is awesome and i wish it shipped with windows by default instead of having to go to the store and install it. everyone who uses it has only good things to say, and it is updated regularly by Microsoft.

It comes with Windows, and has since 2022! Alas, if you mean Windows 10 then you can use some DISM magic to add it to an install image.

If you’re on a list for an app you haven’t released and you didn’t know, what kinds of spyware do you have on your machine? Oh, windows…

The author of the post indicated that they are releasing an update to an existing game, which we can presume has the same executable filename.

Whilst the headlined article is interesting, it's a case of the new and shiny distracting from regressions in what already exists.

The Raspberry Pi 5 is lacking in some fairly basic support that the Pi 4 has. There's no TianoCore, no NetBSD, no FreeBSD, no OpenBSD, no OmniOS(CE) … in fact nothing at all apart from Raspberry Pi OS. A couple of of the operating systems seem to point the finger at poorly documented hardware changes that the manufacturer has been no help with.

* https://github.com/tianocore/edk2-platforms/tree/master/Plat...

* https://wiki.netbsd.org/ports/evbarm/raspberry_pi/#index6h2

* https://www.freebsd.org/where/#download

* https://www.openbsd.org/arm64.html

* https://downloads.omnios.org/media/braich/

So the question that comes to my mind is whether this is yet further new and different Raspberry Pi 5 hardware that comes with no software or prospect of software.

I’ve noticed most of the replies to your comment address the first half, and none (as of right now) address the second:

> So the question that comes to my mind is whether this is yet further new and different Raspberry Pi 5 hardware that comes with no software or prospect of software.

If by “this” you mean the MicroSD Express hat from the article: this is a hobby project produced by a hobbyist, who seems to have no plans to sell or mass produce it.

It is unfair to the creator for you to lump it in with, and draw a conclusion from, the works produced by Raspberry Pi Holdings.

I had assumed that the wires in the jack would rest along the bottoms of the blades in the plug, but I guess if it was never designed for high current applications, the contact area wouldn't be a consideration.

It took a few tries to get it right, but it's amazing that PoE is even an option given how far it is outside of the scope of what the cables and connectors were designed for. I've heard of locations that use it for power, instead of 120 V outlets, because it's cheaper and safer and most portable high-current appliances use batteries, while fixed high-current appliances use 240 V outlets.

Hot plugging is always a challenge, especially with direct current, and negotiation prevents that from being a problem while making a connection, but I never considered that unplugging isn't negotiated first. I wonder if IEC has ever considered using a locking latch, like an EV charger.

I have a PoE camera that I sometimes unplug to restart it, when it freezes up and I can't restart it from the web interface. I'll be sure to turn that port off first, before unplugging it.

If you can turn the port off and then back on remotely, perhaps you can skip the unplugging part completely? I know that some managed PoE switches even offer a button to power cycle a port.
