Aschebescher commented on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU   bbc.com/news/live/c1dr7vy... · Posted by u/belter

Aside from everything else one thing what strikes me as particularly insane is how it’s not even defensible as a protective measure. My favorite everyday olive oil comes from Tunisia. They now have a 38% tariff on them. There are no out of work olive farmers in the US.

The orange man wanted tariffs, the orange man is going to get tariffs. Now we have to hope the American people aren’t so dumb as to still be convinced only he can solve their issues. I don’t hold out hope for that.

According to Trump Tunisia has to buy olive oil from you for the same amount of money that you spent on Tunisias olive oil. Otherwise one side has a trade deficit and that's unfair!

If there is a passenger without a seat belt I think most places you are supposed to pull over ASAP to solve the situation.

It's illegal to stop on the Autobahn if your car is still in driving condition.

Me too! Although I did web hosting and company ISDN lines and not dialup 1996-1998.

Used Windows NT for web hosting and Slackware Linux with qmail for mail hosting. Sold out at what I thought was the top - which was a year or two too early but that's OK.

A lot better than one year late, I guess.

I have the same problem for weeks now. Different browsers, deleted cookies, different IP adresses did not make it work again.

If the CEO of a financial services company is both willing to lie to the public and is willing to have the public believe he is a liar, that is a bigger red flag than if he was just ignorant to the details of how an idea for an ad originated.

Isn't advertising in general making shit up and lying to the public?
Aschebescher commented on Paradise lost: The rise and ruin of Couchsurfing.com   inputmag.com/features/ris... · Posted by u/jakobgreenfeld

The social proof that a couch surfing reference brought was second to none. Each one boils down to this "I, a stranger, stayed for a few nights in this other strangers home for free, and they were good human beings". That social proof carried to any part of the globe you visited.

I cannot think of an internet app that brought people together in a more meaningful and wholesome way at scale.

It was great while it lasted.

It's amazing what a well written software is able to accomplish. Other remarkable examples of establishing trust between strangers are eBay and most darknet markets.

This is amazing.

There should be hacker clubs in each country double checking all suspicious public procurements.

The CCC is a national treasure.
