AnIdiotOnTheNet commented on Barred from Grocery Stores by Facial Recognition   nytimes.com/2023/06/28/te... · Posted by u/ddlatham

We haven't, and I think it is fairly safe to say that rehabilitation and counciling programs to stop shoplifting would be far more expensive and ineffective than imprisonment; so we shouldn't hold out for a perfect solution over an imperfect one.

Also, people don't shoplift just once for fun. A "relatively small loss" is quite large by the tenth time it happens because nobody got punished.

EDIT: For "posting too fast," I would like to address the below comment. For the "it would be cheaper," you should look at how much rehab and counseling costs. For drugs, a 30-day rehab can hit as much as $27K, even if shoplifting rehab (if there was such a thing) would be cheaper. But even if it was cheaper, property crime has a recidivism rate of 78%.

But secondly, you try to rationalize the cost of the stolen item to the cost of imprisonment. This doesn't quite make sense, because A. It values the losses of time, security, customer inconvenience, etc. to the store at $0; B. The store is paying taxes for... what, when they have no guarantee of safety; and C. Apparently the value of justice being served is $0 as well (it's only worth imprisonment if there's lots of money involved - but then, of course, why imprison anyone for their third DUI that didn't involve property damage?).

> I think it is fairly safe to say that rehabilitation and counciling programs to stop shoplifting would be far more expensive and ineffective than imprisonment;

I don't see how. The cost of housing a prisoner in the US varies wildly by state, but the average is $40k/yr.

> A "relatively small loss" is quite large by the tenth time it happens because nobody got punished

Again, those 10 events probably amount to an order of magnitude less than the $40k it would cost to house the prisoner.

I'd much rather prison be reserved for violent offenders who are judged unsafe to keep anywhere else.

> More often than not, politics is about optics, not solutions. This was doomed to fail from the beginning and I bet they knew it. Status quo continues, crisis remains, talking points for the next election cycle established. Sorry guys, we couldn't get it through this time, but next time, trust us, we'll succeed.

Also points scored in the last election. IIRC, this plan was announced a single month before the 2022 election. They got to benefit from the votes of people who thought they were getting their loans forgiven, without ever actually doing that.

AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
Only because the plan was opposed on equally political grounds. The idea was a welcomed one by the people who voted for the politicians in favor of it, and not welcomed by the ones they didn't vote for, so the points went where they belonged.

If it was so certain that they had no intention of going through with it, why not call their bluff and turn the responsibility for killing it back on them?

Telemarketing is invasive and scammy but the idea all marketing is evil reads like something written by a moody teenager.

Marketing does more than just create ads: they research what their customers want, what they say they want vs. what they actually buy, and it doesn't matter how good your product is if no one knows about it.

The problem is that there are almost always other companies making the same/similar products, so you create a race-to-the-bottom effect where you have to eventually get more and more crazy in your methods of reaching a target audience. Don't blame marketing, blame capitalism.

AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
> Don't blame marketing, blame capitalism.

I can blame both, as well as the underlying sociopathic mechanisms that the modern understanding of the terms necessitate.

If I am not mistaken what you are describing is market research, not marketing. Marketing is, in practice if not theory, about invasion of attention and manipulation. If marketing were not these things then companies would be content to have their products discovered in catalogs and store shelves where interested parties willing to devote attention to such things would readily find them.

The debts are huge, but forgiving them is not the answer. If the debt is so toxic, why is the US government still creating new loans that are just as big or even larger? And why are the colleges still forcing their students into the same debt?

The right solution would be to halt the lending entirely.

AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
The right solution in my opinion would be to nationalize the universities and end this predatory nonsense.

This is incredible given some of the listings. The fact one of the pictures is the house on literal fire, coupled with this context, goes to show that some people really don't belong anywhere in marketing or sales.

Namely, honest people who aren't total shitbags always trying to put one over on their fellow human beings for profit.

yeah but it will never happen again. what happens to all other people that already took 30year loans for their overpriced garbage?
AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
They'll be hurt by it, obviously, but I'd rather take that pain now than condemn the future indefinitely.

Of course that puts me at odds with what is apparently the vast majority of humanity. Fuck you, got mine and all that.

I hate when people bring up VVVVVV as a counter-argument to "But my code is embarrassing!". Saying it's an example of "truly awful code" when it's beautiful and well-structured compared to my stuff just makes me confident that I will never get over the embarrassment.
AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
The real embarrassment is writing beautiful well-structured code that no one can find fault in... to support a game no one plays.

If you manage to make a successful game don't take shit from anyone about the way the code looks. They're just Monday-morning quarter-backing.

Who is "having to do without" because they can't pay? In the US you can't be refused life-saving healthcare.
AnIdiotOnTheNet · 2 years ago
Right, which means perfectly preventable problems just plague you until they become catastrophic enough that they require life-saving care. The bare minimum of course.

Telemarketing is just a subset of the greater evil of marketing in general. It is an industry of invading your attention in an effort to manipulate you into doing something you otherwise wouldn't.

We should take every opportunity to worsen their lives as they have employed themselves to worsen ours.
