xhkkffbf commented on Proposal: AI Content Disclosure Header   ietf.org/archive/id/draft... · Posted by u/exprez135

I'm all for some kind of disclosure, but where do we draw the line. I use a pretty smart grammar and spell checker, one that's got more "AI" in it to analyze the sentence structure. Is that AI content?
xhkkffbf commented on US Supreme Court allows NIH to cut $2B in research grants   nature.com/articles/d4158... · Posted by u/rntn

It is fine for the NIH to cut completely the research grants if the government that was elected by the people decides that the country has other priorities.

What is not fine is having a censorship committee, that has obviously no idea about the field, to be deciding based on their vibes whether a proposal should be funded.

I find it insane that in 2025, in the USA, Medical researchers have to scrub their science manuscripts for potentially offending keywords.

How many of the canceled grants are caused by misread phrases like "cellular diversity" and how many were grants from programs where the word "diversity" meant only people with the right skin color should bother applying?

I realize that people are scrubbing certain words from their grants, but how real is the danger that the NIH won't be smart enough to tell the difference?

Meta makes 95%+ of its revenue on their ads. Whats crazy is that they own the platforms that most of their ads run on. Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. How do we know they're not fudging the stats on the ads? They're already known not to be trusted. How has a third party Ad Verification system not popped up by now. Not for just Meta but for all Ad networks.

Presumably the revenue is something that ends up in a bank account. So an audit would make sure that number is accurate.

But I agree with the general problem of auditing advertising and performance. I've tried advertising on FB and my metrics never showed half of the engagement that they claimed.

Out of curiosity, how are federal student loans rigged in favor of the borrower? Asking for a friend.
xhkkffbf · 11 days ago
I'm curious too. The rates aren't particularly generous. Okay, maybe they're a bit lower than the private markets might deliver given the rates of default. And maybe they let you study whatever you want. A private lender might insist on funding economically worthwhile degrees.

The real issue isn't the loan, but the entire system. The colleges have really jacked up the price of a degree. That's the real source of the problem. The interest rates are much closer to the market rates for capital.

It's staggering how much small tax changes can affect the tech world. The change the ability to depreciate software development as R&D was amazing. I saw several startups just up and quit.

Too obvious. There must be a way to say it in a long text that will involve much handwringing.

If driverless tractors can be made lighter in weight, they could also help in reducing how much the heavy machines cause soil compaction.

xhkkffbf · 15 days ago
Presumably the weight is there because it helps the tractors pull. I don't think the human is a small percentage. How could you reengineer the system to get the right traction without the weight?

From the article it sounds like they had strong market share in Digital Cameras in the early 2000’s. What really killed then was phones becoming the dominant form factor
xhkkffbf · 16 days ago
It's true. I chose Kodak digital cameras and was happy with them. They were simple, well-priced and pretty nice all around.

It's just that the cell phones took over that job. (And a dozen other ones too.)

And isn't the Slate aiming for $20k? Maybe they're cutting out more features?
