There’s always been something disturbing about public internet advertisements of military equipment. I suppose it’s dual use, but it seems like baiting a malicious actor to play with it in detail.
Agree2468 · 5 months ago
If you're ever in DC, you should check out the ads in the metro stops near the Pentagon. Seeing those kinds of ads in real life is even more shocking.

Yeah, that is pretty wild.

I recall a co-worker doing something related(?) for a kind of fun tech demo some ten years or so ago. If I recall it was shooting video while passing a slightly ajar office door. His code reconstructed the full image of the office from the "traveling slit".

I think about that all the time when I find myself in a public bathroom stall.... :-/

Line scan cameras operate on this principle, and are still used in various ways to this days. I'm especially partial to the surreal photos generated by them at the end of cycling races

The "social pariah" thing is FUD. It's just people repeating what other people claim to be afraid of, and then becoming afraid of it themselves. Kids can be shitty--if they want to exclude someone or bully them, they're going to do it whether or not the victim has a cell phone. Conversely, if people will only be friends with you if you have a cell phone, then I have some bad news for you: They're probably not genuine friends.
Agree2468 · a year ago
You may consider it FUD, but that was 100% my reality. It's not about people only being friends with you because you have a phone, it's about the shared cultural experience that a group of kids have because of some media they have access to via the phone.

In my case (graduating high school in 2016), I wasn't allowed to watch TV, listen to the radio, play video games, or use the computer at all until I left for college. And especially as an adolescent, those were basically the cornerstone of all conversations between my peers. I never knew what anyone was talking about, and could never really bond with anyone over really anything but sports. And when smart phones became a popular thing in my age group, again I had no access to that or any of the media that it led to.

I will say though, as alienating as it was at the time, I don't particularly regret it because most of what I missed probably wasn't super important, and I think I gained an accurately cynical view on the content media machine as a whole. But I absolute rue the massive difficulties I had building social connections because of it that continue to this day.

There was another website which let you find movie quotes. You search for quote and it brought up small clip where characters are saying that thing you searched for. Had very similar UI, can't find it. Edit: probably https://clip.cafe/ there are few others too

There is another one which is like a Netflix of subplots extracted from movies. I remember it had lots from Rick and Morty. Because Rick and morty keeps bringing up random subplots never to discuss ever again.

There is another website which is a gif database of awesome shots from movies etc. It's like a reference database of camera work.

Will list when I find these urls.

Agree2468 · a year ago
getyarn.io is the clip site I've seen. https://nestflix.fun/ is for movies within movies, not sure if that's what you're referring to by subplots thought.

I can generally see the Magic Eye pictures very well.. these are way harder.

The tiny thumbnails at the bottom of the page work, but the larger images I can't cross my eyes enough.

I think it depends greatly on getting the screen/image size just the right size and also getting the viewing distance right. On large monitors it seems harder to see.

Agree2468 · a year ago
> You can do this by holding your finger substantially in front of the image, and focusing solely on the finger with your eyes, while turning your mind’s attention to the image behind it while keeping your eyes still.

This tip in the article helped me a lot, it's much easier to cross your eyes further with something to actually focus on

The lack of empathy of the responses here saddens me. I sincerely hope none of your parents or grandparents are scammed. And I hope you are all educating your loved ones on the threat of scams in this new era when AI fakes are so easy and realistic.

I've thought about this and probably should, especially since my parents got divorced recently. But I haven't really thought of a way to bring it up tactfully without being patronizing. Any ideas?

I wish I knew more interesting games that could be played with a standard deck. My wife and I travel a lot and there's something I find deeply appealing about being able to walk into any gas station, corner shop, or airport store anywhere in the world and come out with a dependency-free way of entertaining yourself (or even making friends!), and I feel like I don't know enough games that take advantage of that.

That being said, I do have a few standbys:

Bullshit's a favorite for semi-large groups: https://www.pagat.com/beating/cheat.html

Egyptian Ratscrew is my pick for 3-5 players (although I'd caution it against playing it in quiet public spaces): https://waste.org/~oliviax/cards/ratscrew.html

Lastly, Duel 52 is a recent favorite for just my wife and I to play, and very much in the vein of Cuttle: http://juddmadden.com/duel52/

My Ukrainian roommate taught me Durak, it's a good complement to ERS if the people you're with aren't as slap-happy as that game require.

I would consider extendibility a capability, whether you consider that worth the price difference is up to you.
