Recentralization of the Internet around huge for-profit companies isn't good and doesn't help people.

They are better than my ISP. My ISP is very aggressive about abusing the fact they offer DNS service to their customers. Several domains are inaccessible or get routed to some marketing garbage.

Until something better comes along, I will continue to use Clouflare and Google DNS.

Also, the Cloudflare DNS is working for me. If it was down, it was brief.

Quad9 is likely better when it comes to respecting your privacy and not feeding into the cloudflare monolith. It also optionally supports EDNS, which Cloudflare breaks leading to occasional issues with archive.is (to be fair archive.is breaks it on purpose out of spite).

This is why you have a primary and secondary DNS resolver...

The reality is that most applications become pretty much unusable when the primary DNS server is not working.

btw „primary“ and „secondary“ dns resolver is not working the way it sounds at first. It’s more like a loadbalancer instead of fail-over.
