> It's kind of the first time in my life that I've been actively hoping for a technology to out right not deliver on its promise.

Same here, and I think it's because I feel like a craftsman. I thoroughly enjoy the process of thinking deeply about what I will build, breaking down the work into related chunks, and of course writing the code itself. It's like magic when it all comes together. Sometimes I can't even believe I get to do it!

I've spent over a decade learning an elegant language that allows me to instruct a computer—and the computer does exactly what I tell it. It's a miracle! I don't want to abandon this language. I don't want to describe things to the computer in English, then stare at a spinner for three minutes while the computer tries to churn out code.

I never knew there was an entire subclass of people in my field who don't want to write code.

I want to write code.

It's been blowing my mind reading HN the past year or so and seeing so many comments from programmers that are excited to not have to write code. It's depressing.

Benchmarks are super impressive, as usual. Interesting to note in table 3 of the paper (p. 15), DS-Speciale is 1st or 2nd in accuracy in all tests, but has much higher token output (50% more, or 3.5x vs gemini 3 in the codeforces test!).

As someone who pays for YouTube, I don't understand why I can't disable shorts fully. They already have my money. What more do they want?
zparky · a month ago
Honestly, I use revanced on my android phone which lets me disable all shorts content appearing. and on browser if i stick to the subscriptions tab and maybe the sidebar on videos, there's no shorts.

Absolutely. These places have long existed. Hence the risks of the dragnet of data producing consequences exactly like this. This is no accident.

before reddit banned a ton of subreddits for no moderation, I believe r/assistedsuicide was the place for discussion like this.

Desktop memory has also increased in price. I think it’s twice as expensive for DDR5 than it was 6 months ago.
zparky · a month ago
Yep, DDR5 prices have nearly doubled in less than 2 months. https://pcpartpicker.com/trends/price/memory/#ram.ddr5.5200....

As an aside, something extremely annoying I've noticed about tplink is that every once in a while when I go to log into the router, it redirects to a tplink website and proxies my local router page through it.

Terrible.

zparky · 2 months ago
Yeah it's so annoying. Hitting back and stopping loading (or just hitting back) usually gets me to the page.

What value do all the emojis provide?
zparky · 2 months ago

What mass of hydrogen is needed per house to last a winter?
zparky · 2 months ago
rough math: 1000 kwh / mo / house, ~30kwh/kg hydrogen so 30kg H per mo per house. idk how long winters would be, 8 months is 240kg of hydrogen, which if compressed to 10 bar is roughly 300 cubic meters of storage. kinda a lot of space. compressed to 100 bar is like 10kg/m3 which sounds more manageable

Woah so Riot broke League on Linux? I guess they probably did the math but that seems like a bold move.
zparky · 2 months ago
yeah, and mac too, can't run league or valorant. vanguard is their kernel-level anticheat, and windows is like 95% of their market and the difficulty of implementing it on another kernel i guess isn't worth the <5%.

Weird, I used to play LoL on linux all the time a few years back. I assume something changed
zparky · 2 months ago
yeah they introduced vanguard anticheat on all riot games which isn't supported on linux.
