Using "turbocharged" as a metaphor for something being made faster seems reasonable enough to me. Not all engines have turbochargers, installing one makes it perform better by improving combustion, profit? Of course I'm not a car person so my understanding of an ICE is pretty surface level, but it seems like a decent metaphor.

I'm not sure most people knew what a turbocharger was to begin with.

There are many ways you can make an engine faster. To me the choice of "turbocharger" implies some parallel to the turbochargers actual function, extracting energy from a waste product to process input material at a higher rate.

France ditched most of its senior naval officers late in the 18th century, for the "crime" of being loyal to the prior regime: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution

The French army purged old loyalists and replaced them with young officers, but wound up more capable, not less.

The median person does not have $10k sitting in a checking account that they can easily withdraw. My gut feeling is that the threat of kidnapping is a lot more serious in some countries. The US maybe not so much.

That's true, finding someone with 10k is not as easy as picking a person at random, but it is as easy as driving to the right parking lot and picking a person at random.

I want to say, maybe it's better to say first human under proper IRB/regulatory compliance. Some rogue academic in China tried it a few years ago, if I recall, but with absolutely no oversight and he was pilloried. Also I don't think there is much details about what he actually did...

The major difference is that was a hereditary change. So those changes could now diffuse throughout the species over time. As I recall it was a change that reduces vulnerability to HIV infection.

To rob a self driving bus you put a cone on front of it, try that with a bus driver

The best way to lock out tuners would be for the stock ECU to provide as much power as possible.

Although with turbocharged engines, you can turn the power up to the point where longevity goes way down. Still, you could give people a power limit knob they could turn at their own risk to have access to the whole Pareto frontier of performance and longevity. That'd leave no room for tuners.

To get the most power out of an engine you disregard emissions standards, the manufacturer can't do that without getting fines and recall orders.

I've been reading this news headline since I was a teenager. I am over 50 now. Why is this time different?

This time it isn't we will fail in our efforts to maintain a strong dollar. It's, US policy is no longer attempting to maintain a strong dollar.

Used to be, anyway. Now it’s a sure fire way to not get any gov’t funding in the US anyway. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

They would. Someone hacking their computers and causing a death doesn't necessarily absolve them of liability, while a waver of liability could do exactly that.

I know nothing about sailing. I've been on a few sailboats. I love the idea of wind power - probably why I like flying remote control sailplanes.

I would love to volunteer on someone's race/sail boat to get some experience. I'm happy to take the ASA introductory course or ? course.

Any advice on how to move forward? I'm in the Seattle area.

zardo · 4 months ago
Start with dinghy sailing, there are few places in the area you can take a class, rent boats, and race. You'll meet people, and become a better pick for a crew member.
