yeahboats commented on Why are there no good dinosaur films?   briannazigler.substack.co... · Posted by u/fremden

I didn't see any references to Rebirth, and I see that this was published before the latest film came out, so I'm guessing the author didn't want to wait to publish in case anything in there would have changed the tone of this essay. Having seen it this past weekend, rest assured that it would not have.

There's a bit of backstory in the new one about how dinosaur zoos are closing, and that no one wants to see dinosaurs anymore. That premise struck me as strange, as people have been going to zoos for a lot longer than these fictional dinosaur zoos would have been open, and so I have to wonder if it was aimed as a little dig at audiences. The rest of the film ends up exactly as the post spells out. Hollow characters with forced exposition and mutant dinosaurs that you haven't seen in any book, making them just another monster in a monster movie. Maybe it's just that Jurassic Park was the first movie to really capture the size and scale, bringing these creatures to life, and in doing so, became the standard bearer and yardstick to which all future movies get compared to. You'll never get to experience that sense of awe and wonder again. Maybe in another few generations when the original JP falls out of the cultural consciousness.

I just bought a Mazda MX5. I love the car but utterly loathe the "entertainment system". When it isn't hanging/crashing (which it does about once a week) it prevents using any of the screen controls while the car is moving. Instead you need to take your eyes off the road longer to use a physical dial to scroll to the control you want to press. Oh and this weekend I kept getting warnings about high-wind conditions 200 miles away from me that I could not close at all while the car was moving, meanwhile no music and no GPS.

I just don't understand how whoever approves this thinks it's a good idea. It seems to be this way across almost all Mazda models. There used to be a way to turn that off but Mazda removed that. So there are indeed people actively making this moronic behavior a thing.

Before carplay and android auto, at least on my 2015 Mazda3, the UI was designed with the knob in mind, and you could quickly navigate through the menus without looking once you became familiar with the most often used functions. Of course, now that you have interfaces that were not designed with a knob in mind, we suffer trying to spin the knob and highlight the appropriate touch point.

That would be unlawful in every country in the EU (price discrimination based on a proxy of the nationality protected characteristic).

It would not be as long as they were accessible to everyone.

They are not allowed to redirect you without your consent, and you must also be able to change location at any time.

Only two thumb keys seems like it could be a pain. I don't love trying to figure out the timing delays for tap vs hold. After a long search I settled on the Hillside 46 [1][2] which has 4 thumb keys and a splayed layout. Also choc spacing, as I didn't love the gaps between choc keycaps with mx spacing. Not sure why, as the macbook pro keyboard doesn't seem to give me any problems.

I like the all the case options and mods available to the ZSA keyboards. The biggest problem with building your own I feel is the cost of getting a nice, solid feeling case.

This is a great list. Just to piggyback on the Pilot Vanishing Point. I originally wasn't interested in getting one because I was put off with the clip being on the "wrong" end of the pen. I wound up purchasing the Mahjohn A1 which is basically a Chinese replica of the Pilot Vanishing Point. (I guess the patent expired after 50 years) It's my new favorite pen. Even with a steel nib it writes very smoothly. Because it's almost identical you can interchange the cartridges and pin nib inserts.

I'm very tempted to buy the actual Pilot Vanishing Point insert and swap it so I have a 18k nib.

Originally released in 1963 it really is a really cool piece of engineering. Highly recommend the Pilot Vanishing Point or the Chinese replica as a daily writer.

Forgot to post my comment this morning so I'll post under here.

Another recommendation for the Mahjohn (or Moonman) A1. I have always adored the Pilot Vanishing Point but couldn't bring myself to spend 160 dollars on a pen, especially when most of my time is spent typing on a computer. So I found out about the Moonman A1 and I enjoyed writing with it so much that I ordered another. Feels great with some iroshizuku ink (I suppose this is my splurge) and Luechtterm 1917 notebook paper, which I only mention since ink/paper seems to have an impact on writing experience.

The pen also comes in a clipless version for those that want to avoid the clip.

VR boxing. High cardio, works a reasonable amount of muscle groups. 30 minutes should be plenty, and there's other VR stuff you can try although none quite as good for fitness.

Buy one of those cheap ocules headsets and if you don't like it or get bored you can probably get most of your money back by selling it. And yeah the facebook integartion stuff sucks but there aren't really any other options in that price range or with a similar ability to just pick up and go with it.

Do you have one that you recommend? The two I've seen are Creed, and one whose name currently escapes me but is cheaper. The latter I have heard is a more "authentic" experience, while Creed is more of a game.

Thank you!

> I think the only downside to this approach is that there might be some effect based on time of day or the interval affecting your results.

That is definitely true. I'm about to start alternating the versions every 5m to mitigate this. The closer I can get to 0m, the more accurate the results are. This way even if you get a followers spike (let's say you get a viral tweet), the followers will be properly distributed between each version.

I think what you really want to do is randomize A or B within each 30m (or 5m) interval. This is basically switchback testing. Door dash has a nice write-up here: https://doordash.engineering/2018/02/13/switchback-tests-and...

That sounds good in theory, but it really doesn't work out in practice. If you want a like-for-like comparison, you end up with similar weights.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X comes in at 850g for the body alone, which puts it squarely between the Canon R3 (~1kg) and the Sony a1 (~750g). Once you adjust for the equivalent light-gathering ability of the whole kit , the Panasonic Leica 200mm f/2.8 is 1245g, versus the Canon 400mm f/5.6's 1250g.

yeahboats · 4 years ago
This may be my ignorance showing, but wouldn't the DOF be equivalent and the panasonic is getting more light to the sensor? The pixels may end up larger on the canon thus leading to less noise or something, but I thought in terms of light hitting the sensor Fstops were equal, but for DOF you adjusted for crop factor.

Not intending to be rude but... My own main personal problem is not much in switch terms but in the keyboards they are in:

- most can't be easily reprogrammed and some with only some programmable keys demand extra software at runtime to work;

- most are just designed out of IBM PC classic keyboard changing just the look&feel from one to another, there is exactly ZERO competition in keyboard features behind aesthetic/visual aspects/colorful backlit etc;

- keys tend to be smaller and narrow than the past, I suppose to save plastic for the OEM, nothing really for the end user;

- Cherry profile &c makes impossible to move keycaps freely around the keyboard (classic IBM parabolic design, with is very simple actually can perfectly: all keycaps are physically identical).

To be less off-topic: switches soldered in ways that's hard substitute them at home if some breaks after a bit of time. Switch with different keycaps connectors just to create incompatibility between vendors and no standard to rescue...

Long story short: real tactility and force might be interesting to discuss and compare people taste on those topics, noise levels are another topic, but the above issues well... Are IMO far more crucial and still ignored by most...

Have you looked into the various builds on r/ergomechkeyboards? A lot of custom layouts/pcbs, most all with hotswap switches and running QMK, which should let you keep your custom keys on device and not needing any software at runtime. (You'll have to program the firmware at some point though.) I went with one that had a build service as I didn't feel comfortable soldering just yet. Only downside is that cases can be a little unrefined and it's easy to get expensive quickly as they are more niche builds.

I always thought it came from Blues Brothers (albeit "hut" vs "hup", but we were always saying it for jumping around sounds in the 80s and after): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atks5rRqQkg

Likely that Blues Brothers was riffing on the military’s use of hut/hup in marching cadence. Great scene, especially the guy rappelling.
