y_molodtsov commented on Making email more modern with JMAP   fastmail.blog/2019/08/16/... · Posted by u/mfsch

So a few years back, everything was super fast on IMAP on my phone. But now it just crawls. On the Gmail App it's still pretty fast. So I just assumed it was slow because Google was being a dick and trying to get people to use their app instead of Apple Mail or Outlook. Is the protocol slow, or is Google throttling it?

Gmail has its own sync engine.

If I bought Tumblr in a $3 million fire sale, I don't think I'd keep 200 employees on the payroll, but yes, it combined with the tax write-off and infrastructure costs it's reasonable for Yahoo to want to dump it as fast as possible—they could easily be losing $5M a month on it. I'm just shocked there aren't more opportunists in the market that would have bid the price up to at least something resembling reasonable. That being said, even an extremely well-executed turn-around could be 6 months until break-even, which would require potentially upfront $30 million in losses, in which context the sale price is insignificant, and so the question becomes who has web business expertise + $30 million in cash to burn and desire to confidently make a $15-20 million annual profit business a year or two out. Apparently, not many people/companies.

He specifically said they’d continue to employ all of them.

What a slippery slope. I imagine a future when the entire URL itself has disappeared and we live in some sort of Google-controlled walled garden environment, like what they're trying to do with AMP[0]. Some sites only work with WWW prefixed as the APEX DNS record is misconfigured and points to nothing. I've even seen some sites point to `0.0.0.0' but had a CNAME record for WWW and I could then view the site.

Then these websites are broken and needs to be fixed. In the end, the most of the people would probably search for it in the first place.

This behavior will train users to believe that the www in domains isn't important, when it actually serves a very important purpose.

You can't cname example.org, which makes it very hard to use a CDN to serve it unless the CDN provides anycast ips or you delegate DNS to the CDN.

If they're intent on making the address bar useless, they may as well go full hog, like Apple does in desktop Safari -- the address bar shows the domain only, until you click.

But it’s definitely not important for an average user typing “facebook.com” into the address bar. Safari proved that.

Currently is saves my “A” and I get almost no double presses. It says it fixed almost 1500 of them in two months.

Probably because part of the ios appeal is the insanely smooth interoperation between your mac laptop, your appple watch, and your iphone. If you already have a mac because, say, your work got you one (which in the tech industry is ludicrously common) then getting an iphone if you're shopping for a new device makes a whole lot of sense.
y_molodtsov · 7 years ago
And? Tons of apps on MacOS aren’t in the AppStore.

Apple has a profit margin of 37%.

2017 the App store revenue was ~50 billion, which means Apple made 15 billions from fees.

Their net income was ~50 billion, too, which means 0 App store fees would reduce their profits by 30%.

Not sure if all numbers are correct, but I guess this should give us a ballpark feeling of what we are talking about.

Putting together margins on their hardware and software products just can’t be right.

To me this just verifies that diversity is better than uniformity in these scenarios. That's fine if you don't trust PayPal because of your own experiences, but why should we be forced to use Apple Pay?
y_molodtsov · 7 years ago
Nobody forces you to use Apple Pay.

It's the same with poor countries. I don't play games now, but when I was young and lived in Eastern Europe, by some miracle my mother brought me PS1 with one free game included for Christmas. The non pirate games cost about 50 dollars at the time. My middle class mother Made 250 a month...

I got the machine modded and bought few pirated games... It was impossible for us to afford originals.

y_molodtsov · 7 years ago
That’s different, you’re just getting the same price as the entire world. Purchasing power is different, yes.

They link the value provided by updates/maintenance to a tangible cost.

Unfortunately, they do not guarantee that the value added and the extra cost are proportionate, or even have the same sign.

y_molodtsov · 7 years ago
So you can stop the subscription then and not worry about a couple of thousands you’d pay as a single purchase cost.
