xornor commented on Is going to the office a broken way of working?   newyorker.com/culture/off... · Posted by u/sien

> I don’t think there is any need to defend in person work.

There is a need to defend it though. I've already seen several businesses claim that remote work is "the future". Personally, I feel that remote work has been very detrimental to my mental health and I hate it. I don't want that future. It feels very unhealthy.

After 1.5 years, I tried working in office yesterday. The experience was horrible. Work conditions were inferior when compared to my home. Going to office and back home feels very inefficient and harmful to the environment.

No thanks for offices.

Interior or central chimneys make more sense to me than ones against an exterior wall, and they seem common enough in houses of a certain vintage at least. If your chimney is on an outer wall, doesn't it radiate heat to the outdoors?
xornor · 5 years ago
Here where I live (northern Europe), chimneys are always internal. Nobody would even think external chimneys. Heat loss is massive that way.

What if we tried to make it so there were no lords? Just a thought.
xornor · 5 years ago
You just get much worse lords and lose all your freedoms which you may still have.

Free market democracy is not ideal system, but it offers at least some freedoms for serfs. All other systems take them all away.

Humans in Northern Europe have adapted to those conditions with very light skin that maximizes sunlight exposure.

> And how do you that for a fact? It's nutrition science. It's not reliable. These numbers of how much we need has been changing for as long as I can remember.

The changing numbers are why I gave such a wide range. Regardless of who you believe, it’s completely impractical to get the vitamin D you need from meat. It’s not even in the right order of magnitude. What is your proposed required daily value of vitamin D? If you’re going to go around claiming it’s possible to get your needed vitamin D from foods, you ought to have done some math to back up this claim.

And even in Northern Europe, people were outside all the time. Nowadays we sit in the dark offices in the artificial lighting.

I propose the Monte Carlo hiring process: heads means the applicant is hired without question, otherwise they get to go through the regular interview routine.
xornor · 5 years ago
That would ensure also diversity of staff. Very good idea.

Google basically admitted that GPA and where you went to school don't matter and do not correlate with job performance. And yet here we are still optimizing on the Ivy League. It'd be a safe wager that algorithm whiteboard interviews don't either except that they screen out folks who don't pass the interview. So because everyone has that baseline, that baseline is by definition meaningless. The other side of the coin is that performance management is also just as bad.
xornor · 5 years ago
Work results are only sensible measure for the work performance. Easy hire and fire is one solution. Also a short trial period at the start of the work agreement should show if results happen or not (fg. 4-6 months).

That is enough time to have another kid. I have 12 so far. If I lived in Sweden, I wouldn't have to work. I could keep it going for decades.

It's odd that Swedes aren't taking full advantage of the situation.

Twelve kids is 24/7 work.

Why I would change 8 hours to it?

It is also unethical way of life in this planet.
