This is common with companies who support very large customers.

I went to Bentonville, Arkansas a few years ago. You'll see every major consumer packaged good company represented in the skyscrapers there, because Walmart is hq'd there. They want to have people close to Walmart, since Walmart is always a big part of their sales

I actually agree that we ought to be using due process aswell, but I dont like the "these are innocent fisherman" narrative
kevinmchugh · a month ago
You mean the casual sense of "innocence", but they are literally innocent in they they've not been convicted of the crime they were killed for allegedly committing.

This article lists some text adventures to try, but the recommendations are pretty old.

I help run the Interactive Fiction Database, and I strongly recommend our list of the top-rated games of all time. They’re all fantastic. https://ifdb.org/search?browse

Counterfeit Monkey is very high up on my favorite games of the 2010s: https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=aearuuxv83plclpl

The puzzles are all excellent, the writing is remarkable, both for game and fiction.

I don’t know if this is Amazon’s pricing or Apple’s pricing but there’s only usually one reason when price is decrease. Lack of sales. And that’s been true for apples, MacBooks, the last two or three years.

I think this might be another sign of a slowing economy or high inflation.

Apple announced M5s recently, so these are the old chips.

list.filter is ok! Filtering is an action that applies to a list

false.not is borderline but if read as false.negate it makes sense (negating is an action that applies to a Boolean value). That wording screws the chaining though.

5.times is where the pattern breaks: times is not an action that applies to a number (nor an action at all). It’s the block the one that should repeat/iterate - but Ruby breaks the rule there and blocks are not an object (!). If they were you could block.repeat(5) which IMO is cleaner.

Fun fact - there's no Boolean class in Ruby. True is an instance of TrueClass and false is an instance of FalseClass

There's a chapter in John McPhee's "Draft No. 4" (which is quite a time capsure of how writing was done in the last century) about the fact checking topic, and how much effort went into it for stories posted in The New Yorker.

The amount done todays seems to be almost nil, especially when coming to a different conclusion wouldn't agree with an overarching narrative being pushed.

kevinmchugh · 2 months ago
Aiui the New Yorker has always been the most rigorous in its fact checking.

Social media should operate under open protocols, including moderation. Choosing moderation should be client-controlled.

These companies burn through VC money to build systems with network effects then turn around and effectively extract rent. Rent extraction is economically parasitic and anti-productive. This is exactly the sort of thing the government should address by mandating open protocols.

kevinmchugh · 2 months ago
Reddit has an easy way to choose moderation, just stop going to the reddits that are poorly moderated.

I always do half and half, a mostly live demo with some cooking show style start and results. It does depend on your audience, and there is charm in a live demo.

No one wants to see a terminal, that's for sure, so don't display code or start pecking away at a terminal unless you really think you'll need it.

Yes - I call them "the other cake" demos

I know you're not asking for it, but as someone that has a really hard time with anxiety and sleep: quit caffeine and exercise more.

The quitting caffeine is tough. It's 3 days of really bad headaches that no pain killer will touch, because those painkillers act on a different biochemistry. But, after I did that, my anxiety went way down and I was able to sleep a lot better.

Exercise is a bit harder, as it's a schedule problem. Even just a little bit will help though and increase the sleep 'pressure' or so I have found with myself.

Again, not trying to be a jerk here, just trying to help out however I can. My bad if this is not the place.

Best of luck in the struggle!

kevinmchugh · 2 months ago
I quit caffeine with no withdrawal symptoms by reducing my intake by 10% every day for 10 days. I weighed how much iced tea I drank on day 0, then had 90% of that on day 1. The last day was just a shot glass full.

I probably picked the idea up here, but don't know from whom so I thought I ought to continue sharing it

reading your description of the "invasiveness" of chess.com's surveillance of high level tournament play, I realized that chess.com could issue their own anal probe, a sonar listening device to check that there aren't any other anal probes in use. finally! we can be assured of a good clean game played fairly from both seats!
