wysewun commented on Why I left my tech job to work on chronic pain   sailhealth.substack.com/p... · Posted by u/glasscannon

Have had long term chronic pain. Think possibly due to a combination of tendinitis and lack of movemen as a dev

Our bodies aren’t meant to be in one position for that long no matter the ergonomics unless you know what you’re doing.

Lots of people mock tiktok for the dancing but in observing the dances, I’ve grown an appreciation for full range of movement and trying to increase range of motion in the joints

I was able to find some exercises that helped in this to decompress but I can go into more detail if people want

Yes using it regularly multiple times a week.

I watch tons of media on it. My background was in film production and I firmly believe this is the best current way to watch films at home , as long as you don’t mind doing so alone.

The only better experience visually is a laser projector with active shutter glasses. I literally exclaimed out loud when I saw some of my shots on here for the first time. Depth for stereo movies adds so much, but you lose so much vibrancy and light with passive glasses. This solves both issues. I get why James Cameron said it was a religious experience. For fellow film makers, this is the highest quality way that I’ve experienced my own work.

It also is probably the only place at home to experience these movies at that quality. Nobody else has 4k 3D HDR with HFR. Nobody.

So as a previous film buff, it’s worth it alone for me for that.

However I also use it for work regularly. I join industry meetings with it, I multitask regularly. I spend more time on the couch working off my laptop with this as my screen now.

The passthrough and eyesight features have been surprisingly great for being with my family. While people think it’s sad that I’m doing my own thing in the headset, the reality is that we all do our own hobbies in the evening after work. I can now spend that time with my partner and interact with them while they do their thing.

I think it’ll take a while for Apple and the app developers to really get into the swing of things, but it’s been a huge, positive change for me.

That’s a great insight.

I have the Vision Pro and do like the quality and sound from my Sony a90j and Sonos system a bit more, but the size of the screen in the Vision Pro is amazing

I’ll have to play around with this but glad to have another great library with this mindset.

I always am unsure of whether to go with unpoly, livewire and htmx lol. Maybe this will push towards htmx

It sounds like you shouldn't rely on Etsy to drive traffic to your store.
wysewun · 2 years ago
Definitely, it is unpredictable if you are relying on that income. If it’s a side business it’s probably ok

I got this feeling most Etsy sellers nowadays are fronts for actual sweatshops or stuff sold on Alibaba.

They killed the site to hunt metrics.

wysewun · 2 years ago
Some are but many are still legit sellers. We’ve sold on there and were handmade items. Their algorithm is very unpredictable so it was hard to rely on Etsy as a source of revenue

I live in California and I think both state and local gov do a good job. The people are competent and nice and the results are pretty good.
wysewun · 2 years ago
Thanks for saying that. Completely agree. Lignins perfect but for some reason California gets overly negative perceptions

Most of the year, I live in a midwestern suburb: 1/3rd of an acre lots as far as the eye can see. I go on a walk every day, but it's rare that I ever actually see a human being during said walk: Everyone is cooped up in their houses. In practice, in most of this suburban life, every bit of human interaction is planned. We drive to commerce, and there we are met by workers with constantly changing schedules, who have minimal connection to the businesses they work in. It's not impossible to make connections in this environment, but it takes actual effort. This makes work the main form of social interaction for many people around me.

Over the summer, however, I spend time in Spain. A town with a population under 200k, and yet far more dense than San Francisco. Streets are narrower, and most errands are less than 10 minutes away, on foot. The pharmacist, the baker, the workers at the restaurant, don't change very much. Since everyone walks, you really get to pass by every neighbor in the building every couple of weeks. The parks and playing ares with children are never close to empty, and people tend to have routines, so it's far easier to get to know people from random interactions. It's not uncommon to meet people you know, completely by accident, just because you walk the same streets. I might not stop at a certain coffee shop, but it has seating outside, and friends are be sitting there, and therefore I get a chance social encounter, even when I am not visiting the same business. There's benches in random streets, and people meet there, and chat on the street, so you don't even need a business as a "third place", when you have the street. Thus, getting six non-work social interactions a day becomes trivial.

Large parts of America have chosen forms of development that are naturally isolating: It's no surprise so many feel isolated!

Great observation. The lack of density and weather unsuitable for walking is a big factor I’ve noticed as well

I might get down-voted for this, but this is exactly what my wife and I have been discussing over the weekend. We're looking for good deals on property in Lahaina as a result of this.

Maybe let the land stop burning before you think about that.

BRB buying some MSFT

Great point. Time to do research on how much GitHub contributes to msft earnings. Really does seem like they’re on the verge of a huge jump
