This stuff is all a bit much. Fan fiction sites are all “creative content lifted without your consent”. You think J K Rowling consented to Harry x Hermione slash fiction? Or Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality? Absolutely non-consensual.

All of this stuff is clearly a highly cherry-picked gymnastic exercise to justify a pre-existing position. Classic Elephant and Rider stuff.

It’s the same as support for the snail darter. Same as the story about how groups shouldn’t go out during COVID but BLM protests are fine. And if by some incredible chance it had been the FSF or Brewster Kahle who had produced GPT then you guys would be talking about how information should be unchained because creative work belongs to all Man.

Couching this blatantly motivated reasoning by quoting past philosophers is just such middle-brow woe-is-me whining. Take one look at yourselves in an honest sense. Do you have any principles or will you slave them all to your outcomes?

And now I must repeat the litany lest one assume that my opposition to this kind of balderdash be construed as some kind of political tribalism:

* I don’t think we should destroy endangered species

* I think COVID wasn’t a hoax and does spread in large groups

* I think people have a right to protest if they are discriminated against and that includes the black people at BLM

* I love the Internet Archive and have donated to them

i don't think you have a good grasp of why that it was ok for outdoor protests to happen but people should not go out into crowded buildings. the chance of you getting sick from a protest is much less than the chance of you getting sick from going to an indoor gathering at say a club. getting sick is not a binary on or off. it's exposure time and magnitude vs. your immune system's defenses.

I typically jump on the latest macOS with enthusiasm. I once made the mistake to install the beta version of the next os, and well, that didn't go well for me. But typically, within X.1, I'm there.

However something shifted since this "visionOS" melted version of macOS (Tahoe); where I have absolutely no intension to upgrade from Sequoia. I hope they will fix it by the time I'll be forced to upgrade (post support deadline).

It started with the macOS that brought the iOS settings panel. We went from a logical structure of easily findable stuff to a complete mess. Just open the "Keyboard" settings on macOS today and it's bewildering how they could ship this and think this is fine. Steve would roll in his grave.

The process to allow running applications that are unsigned is just a horrible hack. It feels like a last minute "shove it and move on!".

By 2035 I wonder if we'll be all running KDE or WindowMaker and the hell with modern OS GUI.

From a Gestalt standpoint, human relations with desktop computers are not the same as with thumb driven mobile OS or air-pinch driven vision OS, period. The hell with "glass" or "flat" design. Desktop OS should be as forgettable as possible, as it's about having long stints of flow, not giving a feeling of "air" or "play".

about 5 months ago i jumped ship to kde plasma and it's been great. took a month or two to get the most prized things working the way i wanted but kde is so configurable that you can get it to work pretty much identical to a mac. toshy gives you all the familiar mac keyboard shortcuts and lets you do per application configs. I can't see going back to a mac unless an employer mandated it. the freedom you have is refreshing. if something doesn't work the way you want it you can change it.

weaksauce · a month ago
yeah they only have one system for it all and they are all called bugs.

here's the 25 year old bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57805

Is CRTL-Q included? They always insisted that applications can't change that shortcut on Linux.

At last! Mozilla fixing longstanding bugs! (I jest)

The devil is in the details though: https://hg-edge.mozilla.org/integration/autoland/diff/8a6d6c...

Looking briefly at this,

* there doesn't appear to be any migration from old directory to new directory. Does the code just use ~/.mozilla if it still exists, ~/.config/mozilla otherwise.. or does it _require_ MOZ_LEGACY_HOME=1 to be set to keep using your existing config, and just lose all config if you don't set that?

* there doesn't appear to be a proper split between ~/.cache (always-removable cached data) ~/.config (configuration) and ~/.local/share (application data that is not user-editable configuration and is not just cached data either), they just moved the entire set of profile stuff to ~/.config

Is that about right, or do I need to read the code more carefully?

you joke but they did just close out the initial implementation of a something like 27 year old bug. about:keyboard was recently added to nightly to allow you to change or clear the built in keyboard shortcuts of a bunch of menu items like save, back, refresh, or open dev tools or whatever.

I don't get the value ad of youtube music. Everything's already on youtube and they let you make playlists, and they have playlists of the top charts already.

What else does youtube music get you? I can play on my phone with the screen off with yt vanced ( and I would never pay just for that feature, because I remember when it was free and they took it away )

> I can play on my phone with the screen off with yt vanced

there's a lot of iphone/ipad users out there.

> Everything's already on youtube and they let you make playlists, and they have playlists of the top charts already

I don't use it but ui probably. ads maybe. plenty of people have money and don't want the inconvenience of trying to get around it.

I don't really know Ruby, what is the to_s doing in

       parts = version_string.to_s.split(”.”).map(&:to_i)
Is it to_string? Isn't version_string already a string?

weaksauce · a month ago
it is a string usually but could be called with a single number or some other object that has that method overwritten and it would still do the right thing.
