Thank you for writing software for all of us Python day-jobbers who wish we were writing Rust instead.

The vision sounds interesting but I think if they have two challenges they will need to overcome to compete in the IDE space

1) Their LLM integration needs to be at the quality of Cursor and VSCode to pull people away from those

2) Reduced friction to move over (keyboard shortcuts, common plugins, etc)

I think the Zed team is perfectly capable of winning. The bigger risk would be them trying to tackle fancy stuff before making sure the basics are good enough to get developers to switch.

They need to build up a deep understanding of why folks are sticking to Cursor/VSCode and not swapping over.

P.S. I would love for Zed to win in the market because I'm sick of slow software and it's refreshing to finally see an intense focus on performance.

FWIW their default keybinds mirror VS Code nearly 1:1 with some (IMO) improvements

Article doesn't understand that cutting "between five and 20 percent of support and admin processing" is really valuable, instead it seems to want to dismiss that as a dull failure.

Business process outsourcing companies are valued at $300bn according to the BPO Wikipedia page. So 5%-20% of that is 15-60bn. So even if we're valuing all the other GenAI impact at zero the impact on admin and support alone could plausibly justify this investment.

I suppose my question that I’m too tired to napkin math on is if those benefits justify the sometimes astronomical cost of the tooling or integration

The point is that instead of having to complain about the ownership class, you can now be an owner more easily than before. AI enables people to do more on their own. You can build stuff that simply was not feasible before. You still have to do it though.

If you prefer to be subject to the ownership class, I recommend being honest about why that is.

I, for one, just don't really believe that there's enough market for every person to have their own software business. There's only so many ideas that are interesting enough to be sold.

Zed is not a great modal editor, modality is a strapped on afterthought. At least that the impression the vim keybinding give me. IMO the best chance I see for a fast modal editor that works out of the box is Helix.

I at least really like that ctrl-w allows switching between panels as well as editors, something VS code doesn’t do (or at least, you can switch to the explorer but not back?) and is a major papercut IMO

Is it possible to make an extension like that for Zed?
weakfish · a month ago
AFAIK not with their current extremely limited API, but it’s on their roadmap to have a more extendable editor.
