warbeforepeace commented on Australian employees now have the right to ignore work emails, calls after hours   reuters.com/world/asia-pa... · Posted by u/testrun

Maybe we should think of these things as employment flags?

There's no right-to-disconnect in my country, but sometime this year my boss started putting "I don’t expect a response to this email outside of your normal working hours." on the end of his email signature.

I might not be earning FAANG money, but it's just another sign I'm working for a 'good' company.

warbeforepeace · 2 years ago
I work for FAANG and have had one page outside of working hours over that last 12 months. I do not respond to emails on weekends or evenings. I do not turn my work laptop on during vacation at all. I leave at home in a safe.

I have served as an election officer in Fairfax County, Virginia since 2012.

Every. Single. Legal. Voter. Will. Be. Given. A. Ballot.

Your allegations may have merit elsewhere, but the "Virginia is for Lovers". Of elections.

If one actually gives a GIVE about election integrity, then a well-staffed polling place with a secret ballot cast and counted on reliable equipment is PRECISELY what is sought.

These mail ballots and drop boxes are relatively weak, security-wise.

What we DON'T seem to hear is any sort of thorough analysis.

I'm as big a geek as anyone, but simple, low-tech systems seem preferred.

And don't get me started on these Rank-Choice Ballots.

There is zero evidence of any real election fraud. This is a fear tactic of right wing nuts that want to suppress minority and poor voters.

I don't understand why Americans are reticent to a voting ID. Here in Mexico it's pretty normal and there's like nothing crazy about it. It identifies yourself and makes sure only people legally allowed to vote can vote.
warbeforepeace · 2 years ago
because getting an ID costs money and time that most poor americans do not have. The poorest americans that work multiple jobs are simply not able to afford to take time off work to do this.
warbeforepeace commented on Active turbulence cancellation makes bumpy flights smoother   newatlas.com/aircraft/act... · Posted by u/bookofjoe
londons_explore · 2 years ago
The real savings come when this tech can be built into the airframe. The airframe can only bend and flex a certain number of times before it cracks and fails.

Todays airframes have a lifespan measured in flight hours, and an estimation is done as to how much turbulence will be hit per hour of flight. At the lifespan limit, the plane is typically scrap.

If this tech can reduce the flexing of the airframe during flight by 80%, you can probably get 5x the flight hours from the airframe before it becomes too weak to be safe (or more - half the flexing typically more than doubles the lifespan)

Alternatively, you can make the airframe thinner and lighter for the same number of operating hours (and that's what is likely to happen, since aircraft manufacturers don't want to put themselves out of business). Thinner and lighter airframe saves fuel and makes the aircraft cheaper.

Why do this matter? You can just listen to the frame to hear early cracking signs.

They've done that. That's what this is about.

It really shouldn’t matter much. My 2016 car wasn’t laggy with CarPlay. I promise you that thing wasn’t fast.

Or are you using wireless? I don’t know if other vehicles are better but the only times I’ve gotten to try wireless CarPlay the lag drove me nuts. If I plugged it in instead it was great.

Having rented a dozen different cars with car play i can say some manufacturers make car play feel just as painful as their in house infotainment systems.

Automobile companies tried for years to make a decent infotainment system in cars, and almost universally they were all terrible no matter how expensive the vehicle. Finally Android Auto and CarPlay gave everyone what they wanted - decent access to music on their phone, call capabilities that actually work, and program integration with things they actually use with internet service they already have.

Then manufacturers realized they were losing control to Google and Apple, and want it back. So now I guess we're back to random garbage half-baked solutions that no one likes, just so they can sell subscriptions for seat heaters and music players. Back to the walled gardens everyone, move along.

I'll never buy a new vehicle again, particularly GM now, and simply stick to something older I can either put any standard double-din deck into, or a vehicle with 3rd party mods that then add Android Auto like my Infiniti that shipped with the worst infotainment system ever.

$40 bucks on fiver gets you a better management system than what GM will develop.

I totally understand it.

There are some things you can escape and some things you can't. Should we all just give up totally despite the fact we could win some battles?

There's a fair number of HN participants that are no fans of Amazon.

warbeforepeace · 2 years ago
Try boycotting aws. I dare you. Its damn near impossible.

Appalling take on almost every front.

1. "Are you protesting X, why not Y and Z" boring rethoric, I will not even elaborate

2. "Cancelling your amazon account has no impact" well for crying out loud, what are they as an individual supposed to do, lobby the US State Department? Apart from direct action and writing on the Internet about it, not much you can do about a trillion dollar company.

3. "But what about hamas" You don't have to be pro-terrorist to recognise that Israel has attacked civilian targets indiscriminately, repeatedly bombed areas that it had declared safe for refugees, tallies civilian casualties together with military as "enemies killed", etc. It's frankly disgusting to think this can be in any way excused. This is not even to mention how hardliners like Bibi have themselves strengthened Hamas to sabotage the two-state solution.

Cancelling your amazon account then posting on a site run on aws (where amazon makes its real money) wont do anything.

I respect your choice to cancel your Amazon account for your own reasons, no matter what my opinion may be of the either the company, the effect it may have, or which side of the argument you're supporting by doing it.

It's an act that shows the will to change ones self for the better, of which there should be more (not specific to boycotting).

What "feels" right or wrong to each individual is different, but the world would probably be a better place if everyone listened a little bit more to that feeling (at least in how they act in and of themselves, as opposed to being prescriptive to others about it).

warbeforepeace · 2 years ago
Cancelling your amazon account and posting about it on a service run by aws is pretty comical.
