PoC have a voice. If they have a fear, they can express it. They don't need a random white person hand-wringing on their behalf when that person self-admittedly doesn't even know how they might feel on the subject.

I think white people giving a shit and talking about these issues is the only reason we've come so far. Your attitude would have kept us on the 1700s.

I guarantee you whatever route you take in a city, you will fall under the gaze of at least one security camera.

It doesn't appear you have any evidence for your viewpoints, just vague fears, topped off with a standard appeal of "what about PoCs?"

wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
Yeah but there's a difference between an entire street of personal security systems accompanied by apps and social networks built on fear mongering.

"just vague fears" they're called opinions which I'm allowed to have and voice in a public forum. Sorry for trying to consider the well being of the less privileged overly targeted people getting aggressively kicked out of their neighborhood.

How do security cameras remove the "vibrancy of your young urban block" or "the sense of trust and community in your suburb"?

Do the locks on your door accomplish the same incredible feat?

wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
There are gentrifying city streets that I, a white male, will not walk down because the entire street is new construction with builder included Ring systems. I don't want to walk down a street and have literally 30 people get notifications on their phones that I'm there.

I can't imagine how the local PoC that are getting pushed back feel about that. Existing neighborhood watch networks already have people crying wolf at the smallest things. This is how the culture of the area dies.

wDcBKgt66V8WDs commented on Crows could be the smartest animal other than primates   bbc.com/future/article/20... · Posted by u/hhs

When I was a child, I'd spend a lot of time at my grandfathers farm, and one summer he took in an injured crow that hurt its wing.

For some strange reason, he named all of his animals Jack, cats, dogs and now crows. So we'd go out in the morning and my grandfather would call out "Jack" and the Dog would come running down the yard, and then next thing you'd see the crow hopping down the yard after the dog. It would arrive and wait for him to pick it up with his hand and it would sit on his shoulder while he fed it nuts and seeds. Jack the dog and Jack the crow would also hang out together and play. It also would be very wary of other visitors and knew to leave the house if it was going to go to the toilet.

This went on for maybe a full year until it decided to just fly off, but throughout that time it really opened my eyes to how smart animals could actually be, and is a really fond memory of mine.

Inverse story: my dad sprayed water at a crow on his lawn, the crow then took to perching on the clogged gutter above the front door and kicking water at anyone who walked under.
wDcBKgt66V8WDs commented on The Uncertain Fate of Amsterdam’s Red-Light District   newyorker.com/news/letter... · Posted by u/danso

I have been living in Amsterdam for about half a year. Met lots of locals. The red light district is not liked. It’s full of trashy people wanting to do drugs and have sex. Sure if you find those to be pleasures of life then be my guest, but the locals hate it: imagine having an entire neighborhood ruined by these kind of people, who let me tell you are not the most respectful kind.

But the real issue is that none of the girl prostitutes are locals. Not once I heard of a local Dutch girl doing this. And it’s also mostly lots of people that need he money. If the brothels were full of dutch-rich women then I’d be fine with it... but reality is that it’s not and it encourages poorer people to participate in the activity. And in a way it exploits these people even if it’s their choice.

Also let’s not forget the immortal rule: wherever there’s money, there’s corruption.

So unfortunately I don’t favor the red light district. Maybe if it was far from the center and if it was done in a way where you would be 100% sure where nobody was exploited, then yes. But reality is that nobody can know for sure that exploitation doesn’t happen.

But then there’s also the other side of the coin that if you make it illegal it will anyway happen in a worst manner... on the streets and with more exploitation.

So maybe having something organized and outside cultural city center seems like a good win-win situation.

wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
Its location in effectively the city center is unfortunate. I absolutely love Amsterdam and recently spent 10 lazy days there but tried hard to avoid getting within a kilometer of Amsterdam Centraal. Reminds me of Times Square but with a lot more bros.

> The question is whether an organization should have a designated leader who is on a sustained, public campaign advocating about an unrelated issue that many consider controversial.

I don't understand this. Are people in prominent positions not allowed to have opinions or interests outside of their job? As long as RMS wasn't actively using his power/influence as head of the FSF to advance his odd-ball views I really don't see what the problem is. The only argument I could see is that RMS's persona was so fundamentally quintessential to the FSF that the two could not be separated -- in which case firing him was obviously a boneheaded move.

wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
The problem is people don't want to associate with an organization lead by someone they have problems with, and a lot of people have problems with his views/behavior. The struggle of the FSF is difficult as it is. He doesn't have to be actively using power/influence.

I don't understand the positioning. So it's instagram but only with friends and with status as an option? Why couldn't they change instagram to filter on friends or something?

I've heard the same advice about crouching, but have never been in a position where I've tried it. When canoeing, the advice I've heard is get to shore and crouch on your PFD for additional insulation.

For sake of comparison, The article says a lightning strike releases about 500 MJ of energy. Wikipedia says a "standard" stick of dynamite contains about 1 MJ of energy[0]. In my estimation standing 30m from the (very rough) equivalent 500 sticks of dynamite going off counts as damn close.

I realize this is a very rough comparison, but I'd guess that it's surely within an order of magnitude or two for comparison purposes. Joules are joules, but how they're released might be wildly different, we're way outside the realm of my expertise. I wouldn't want to be 30m from 50 sticks of dynamite going off, or even 5.

I don't know how the sound would compare between dynamite, but I agree with your observation that a lightning strike at 30m is a hell of a noise.

Yeah I mean 30m is close from the perspective of something that ridiculous happening, but my point is the phenomenon of electrons moving to the point that you can actually sense it happening is localized to path of the lightning strike. Hence 30m is not close.

Why are you so mean? Have you been hit by a lightning?
wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
I'm trying to be direct, this person put out a paragraph of bad advice based on anecdotal (and not applicable) evidence while the relevant professionals and education material disagree.

How does the striking mechanism work? Doesnt the current go through the tallest object around or not nevessarily?
wDcBKgt66V8WDs · 6 years ago
Something I learned recently was that lying on the ground might seem like a good idea, but it isn't the safest position. It is thought, though I think the science is kind of out still, that the safest position is basically squatting and holding your knees. IIRC, lying down increases the chance that a near strike will still send current over you.
