I have mixed feelings. "Educating the masses" is important, at least to a certain baseline, otherwise we get failing democracies due to manipulation of uneducated voters.

But it's important to still have a separate track for the best students. Those will grow up to do the important work and move the society forward. If you put them into a mediocre class it will waste their potential.

Unfortunately, in my class of students, being good at solving Olympiad level questions did not turn out to be a good predictor of their contributions to society.

Until the human body becomes capable of creating energy out of nothing, this is irrelevant

Very bad take. What if our bodies adjusts the burn rate based on when we eat when we exercise? if that is true you can potentially eat more and lose more weight.

It is concise and it is not substantive.

It is very very substantive. I am sure just looking at my post you realized that my proposal had significance and was meaningful. May be you are unhappy I did not list down the reasons why. But you already know that if you have slightest clue in this topic.

Because it is not substantive

Let us say it is rather concise. It is just that you do not like the idea.

But those have a tangible return to society that people flock to. Almost the entirety of Google products is open to anyone on Earth to just open up an use because that ad model is so successful. People click high value ads and it covers to cost of video distribution to anyone with an cell phone and wifi.

Jane street on the other hand is arbitraging against regular folks money, so they can distribute the gains to their select high value clients. There is no free office productivity suite and limitless "How to repair cell phones to start your own business" videos distributed to everyone for free.

In a way, they are doing opposite functions. Ad media takes from people who buy stuff and gives to people who don't (or cant't) buy anything. Jane street and their ilk take from regular people and give to those who have everything already.

Your "ad" people are rotting the brains of entire generations by addicting kids using many different tactics (insta, YouTube shorts, TikTok....) . Please spare us the moral judgement.

Surely this isn't the totality of all discourse on the subject.
objektif · 5 months ago
I do not even think it is morality actually. It is just that citizens of western countries would absolutely like to see these mosquitos eliminated from their countries. It is just that they are against eliminating them in Africa, Latin America etc. In the name of being “concerned about ecological impact.” of doing so. Once global warming accelerates and some of those diseases such as dengue and zika become prevalent here in America public opinion will magically change haha.

A huge focus of gene drive manipulation of mosquitos is to force their populations to extinction.

The male is created with an X chromosome that will destroy any other X with which it is paired, leaving only other male progeny with the hostile X.

This goes on for a few hundred generations, driving the female population to zero.

There are grave moral questions in this, but eventually the technology will reach those who decide to deploy it, perhaps against the general will. It is only a matter of time.

Ask Africans if they would be against eradicating mosquito born diseases. It is very easy to speak from your comfortable home. I have strict opinions about this one issue; we need to forget about ethics, morality and take calculated risk and wipe out disease carrying mosquitos.
