I tried drying linens and clothes outside the first time I moved from an apartment (with strict controls on what can and cannot be seen on the balcony) to a single family home. I quickly stopped because there was so much dust that would accumulate on your freshly washed clothes in the time they were hung outside. That's not to mention bird poop or feral cats deciding to do some stretching on your sheets.

You need a sun room.

> America is...objectively the best place to live in the world rn

I'm American and a frequent international traveler, and I could not disagree more. Almost every other country I've been to has been superior in every way that truly matters. The only reason I stay here is because I don't want to abandon my loved ones.

objektif · 3 days ago
Can you name a few of those countries?

> I don't want the Trump administration to be the only ones with guns in this country.

How about: "I don't want the Trump administration to be the only ones with tanks in this country."

Are you going to buy some tanks? How about F35s?

I would have agreed with you but look at what is happening in some Asian countries right now. Imagine a situation where the thugs knock on your door with their guns. I will probably never own guns but there is an argument to make.

it's material conditions that lead to violence, not the tools.

sure tools make it easier, but gun control didn't stop the pm of japan from getting assassinated.

if people weren't so desperate, polarized, and angry, i would bet my entire life's savings gun deaths would be decimated

objektif · 3 days ago
This is not a good argument. How many people in Japan die from gun shots in a typical year. Tools are absolutely the problem. With that many craY guns out in the US you are simply significantly increasing chances of shit happening.

Come on no. You can kill 100s with an AR 15 or whatever. The problem is also with the tools.

Nepal has always been somewhat of a basket case. Remember when their prince went nuts and shot the royal family up? Then the whole country went through the wringer in the mid-00s.

Shame, it’s one place I really want to visit, but it seems like it will be a bit of a challenge (well, at least not Iran-level challenge, which is another place I want to visit someday and has different but even bigger problems).

objektif · 5 days ago
It is the most fascinating country I have ever been to.

startlink like systems are just relays like wire over ocean, there are through ground stations that do all the work.

Totally enforceable.

I have mixed feelings. "Educating the masses" is important, at least to a certain baseline, otherwise we get failing democracies due to manipulation of uneducated voters.

But it's important to still have a separate track for the best students. Those will grow up to do the important work and move the society forward. If you put them into a mediocre class it will waste their potential.

objektif · 14 days ago
Unfortunately, in my class of students, being good at solving Olympiad level questions did not turn out to be a good predictor of their contributions to society.

Until the human body becomes capable of creating energy out of nothing, this is irrelevant
objektif · a month ago
Very bad take. What if our bodies adjusts the burn rate based on when we eat when we exercise? if that is true you can potentially eat more and lose more weight.
