I have the feeling that this should be presented in an animated way.

Like, you see somebody's passport, then it zooms out, the passport disappears and you see the entire picture.

vestrigi · 10 months ago
Nice idea, maybe even tied to the scroll wheel.

I‘d love to see this in a book that has simple white pages with little cutouts showing only the passport picture of the next page. Then you turn that page around and see the full picture.

wow. way to address the subject of the post.

I've been posting links about the overlap of tech and culture because tech does not exist in a vacuum and HN is often blinkered about these topics.

Thank you for your submissions! I think submissions like these promote valuable discussions on HN.

"Some people are commuting eight to 10 miles, some only one or two miles, but they jump on their bike and go. With a traditional bike, that would never have been considered"

As a European this struck me as odd. 8 - 10 miles on an ordinary bike is considered a pretty normal bike commute. Especially as Ohio is pretty flat right?

vestrigi · a year ago
As an european I feel like 8-10 miles (13-16 km) is a rather long bike commute which would take at least 45 minutes on an ordinary bike. I ride my bike a lot and would occasionally do such a commute but most people aren’t willing to do that at all, sadly.

You make it sound as if that was goodwill, but there's money in that, I believe.

I'm not saying that the money is full reason, but at least partial.

I'm almost 100% positive they will, there's a broad consensus among left and right that this proposal is bonkers.

What I've heard is that the only this is a proposal that child rights NGOs has been lobbying for, which I think we can both agree, are not expert in anything tech.

vestrigi · 2 years ago
Many children's rights NGOs also think that the proposal is a terrible idea. This article gives an overview (German) https://netzpolitik.org/2022/massenueberwachung-das-sagen-ki...

I totally understand that!

In fact, this comment made me remember that I’ve had a color filter accessibility setting in iOS that lets me turn the screen to grayscale.

Kind of a trip to use a modern smartphone like this, but also kind of… relaxing in a weird way.

Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size -> Color Filters

You can even set a shortcut to quickly toggle them on and off.

I have mine set to a red filter and assigned it to a double tap on the back gesture, which is a blessing at night in complete darkness!

Seems like a potential nightmare when your sensor network's operation is contingent on one badly tuned power circuit in a crappy Chinese LED floodlight in the janitors closet being perpetually left on.
vestrigi · 2 years ago
Question is whether this could harvest enough energy to store it in a small battery to continuously provide power. But really sounds frightening if you change the setup of a few appliances and then suddenly half of your autonomously powered devices don't get enough power anymore because the noise is not high enough anymore.

If you are interested in novel keyboard layouts, there are many 2-dimensional chromatic layouts where transposition is isomorphic (i.e. playing in a different key only requires changing where you start). In one notable example, all major and minor triads can be played with a single finger[1], because 5ths and major/minor thirds are always adjacent.
