I just did something similar last week: https://varun.ch/posts/elective-list/

it’s almost funny how similar the scraping code ends up looking for these kinds of things

Forgive my ignorance, but why don’t game developers put more effort into limiting the amount of data accessible to the client (restricting it only to what’s reasonably necessary)? For example, couldn’t more movement physics be validated or handled server side? Cheats might still be able to read some data from the game process, but ideally, they’d be limited to issuing inputs like any other player, based only on the same visible output everyone sees. Is it cost? Does this model just not align with how the client/server split looks in games?

I’m all for free speech but this sentence structure specifically should be abolished. It’s so LLM.

I noticed the website looked quite similar to other websites for downloading videos, and then found the link to your personal website in the footer (which links to your other sites). How/why do you run so many similar websites? Surely the domain name costs alone are insane? And all linked back to your name? Legal liability? Is this profitable?

I fully agree. Anyone who wants to defend against XSS should have a tightly locked down CSP. That's the only way. (no, "careful" coding isn't reliable enough)
varun_ch · 3 months ago
I think you mean a tightly locked down CSP and “careful” coding (just escape practically everything you render), a tightly locked down CSP is also not reliable enough.

Yes, it already does! You just need to select donut as the default browser
varun_ch · 3 months ago
That sounds great! I actually made something very similar to this (a middle man to set as my default browser), but for some reason it was incredibly slow to open specific Firefox profiles. I’ll take a look at how you implemented yours :)

I think this is someone that would be really helpful to me. I use Firefox, which has fairly ‘meh’ browser profile support at the moment. If I click a link systemwide, it’ll usually open in the wrong profile (whatever Firefox considers the ‘default’)

I used to use Arc, and loved the system they had to let you pick a profile to open a link with.

Would this let me see a prompt when clicking on a link, and let me decide which Firefox profile to use/additionally pick other browsers? That sounds like it would be perfect.

Random users can update business profile numbers and Google publishes them without asking the number's owner for permission? Seems like a huge oversight.
varun_ch · 3 months ago
There’s a (somewhat dramatic) TED talk about this oversight from a few years ago: https://youtu.be/5c6AADI7Pb4
