> But the quality of MacBooks is just another level. I had 3 or 4 so far since 2010, and each of them held at least 5 years. Crazy good.

When I read things like this it really sounds like there is some reality distortion field in the mac world. How is that anywhere special? I'm running a thinkpad X1 as my 2 main laptops (it was my only work machine until 2 years ago) and I never felt the need to replace it. It gave me 8-10h battery life and the only issue I ever had was that 1.5 years ago the battery was reaching end of life and capacity started dropping very fast.

That was just a 70$ repair I could easily do myself.

My youngest daughter just inherited my mother's x220 (?) (she has been running Linux) that I got for my mother in 2011 or 2012. That never received any work and still works fine except that I didn't change the battery so you have to run it of ac power.

My older daughter and my mother both just got some used thinkpads that are >3years old and don't have any issues either.

So from my experience a 5 year lifetime for a macbook is really nothing special and definitely not "crazy good".

I love the parents in the tech community. They had unfettered computer and internet access which formed them into the successful people they are today. But they were special and their circumstance was special and their kids are not allowed to use the internet because now its bad.

> Cryptocurrencies don't stand a chance.

Now, try to use Pix outside of Brazil - it's not even used in other Mercosur countries, what's the chance of having that adopted in other countries... And, that's problem #1.

How much do you trust your government with your money? A system like Pix don't stand a chance to get a worldwide adoption - maybe people are naive but governments won't unify to adopt a common system controlled by just a single entity / country.

What we may however end up with, are dozens of systems like Pix, one for each country, union, etc. Still cryptocurrencies as-is remain relevant (see point 1)

Good? Dozens of fee free instant digital payment options sounds like a huge improvement over the outrageous network of credit/debit fees

Tech debt is such a flawed concept. There is no world where requirements 10 years later are the same as the MVP, or even foreseeable. You can never pay it off. Software is always changing.

Even if it were debt, debt is a tool to get you what you need today. And then you likely roll it into something down the line. Maybe you pay it off (and even then the asset still requires maintenance) Like a starter home, then upgrading to a larger home to start a family, etc, etc. Requirements and resources are in constant flux.

What are "sleep sounds"? Like sounds of others sleeping?

Do you experience silence anything during the day or any other time? I couldn't imagine having sounds while trying to sleep, it's my quiet time when I can fully focus on what's inside my head, and outside sounds tend to be distracting. But still interesting how we all are very different, no right or wrong :)

Yes, the sounds of intense sleep apnea. Typically recording 4 or 5 people snoring overlaid into a harmony of sleep sound

The DX7 is an incredible synth, but one of the joys of playing is hearing the sound change to your adjustments and the DX7 just doesn't do that. But it is great fun to feed through filter, delay and reverb pedals. Thats kind of the best of both worlds

You expect to not be responsible for what happens to the software you put into production?

(… and I'd like to avoid distracting arguments that amount to "my company does on-call badly" — yeah, those problems do exist and we should strive to fix them. But if I'm to not categorize the argument here as the baby with the bathwater, then we need something to replace on-call with. Prod goes down on a Saturday afternoon; are you going to tell management "tough cookies" until Monday?)

I expect to be very responsible during my working hours.
