This whole problem wouldn't exist if we used distributed chat protocols which have been around for over 40 years (IRC). With the added benefit of having an open specification and multiple implementations. No walled gardens.

And if you think IRC is too old for the modern world take a look at matrix or xmpp.

How did we let discord take over is a mystery to me, or rather a tragedy.

You can, and I did, but at some point I must've accidentally fumbled one of the many 'would you like to back up your data to...?' requests as I recently had a warning that my Google drive was nearly full. This was perplexing as I very rarely use it, so I check and lo! A years worth of photos off my daughter there. Not happy.

This happened to my mom too. She told me she can't do any more photos because her storage is full. So I checked her android phone a and somehow the cloud backup got activated (we explicitly turned that off!!) and our family photos were uploaded to google cloud..

I hate google so much for doing this.

Looks like Focal (20.04) isn't on an affected version. Jammy (22.04) looks like it is.

On 22.04 apt update && upgrade doesn't help.. yet?

I am in your comments telling you that federated server is still just someone else's computer.

But there are systems where user is sovereign, defined by their key, not dependent on any masters. One such system is Nostr:

There is good stuff out there. I watched Pantheon and Scavengers Reign recently, both excellent, but not old stable anime.

Pantheon is amazing. Especially the ending.

Haha this is neat. If you zoom out and rotate the scene, you can position the ISS to watch it transit in front of the Moon.

Wow.

The video and map position appears to be a bit out of sync.

Was watching flyby over USA and when the map position exited land and went over ocean, it took about a minute for the video to transition from land to ocean.

Probably bc the nasa feed has delay?

FOSS everything or go home. I am not buying into closed VR ecosystem. Not Apple, not Meta, not anything else that is trying to lock me in.

I wanted to say that I use similar project called HashIDs, but I see that HashIDs rebranded to Sqids :)
