I cannot even believe that is a question at all.

Fast forward to now, and autocorrect in draft Teams messages appears to be the unbreakable barrier.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say this has much, much less to do with the architecture and far more to do with the data and training pipeline. Many have speculated that gpt-oss has adopted a Phi-like synthetic-only dataset and focused mostly on gaming metrics, and I've found the evidence so far to be sufficiently compelling.

Yes. I tried to ask oss-gpt to ask me a riddle. The response was absurd. Came up with a nonsensical question, then told me the answer. The answer was a four letter “word” that wasn’t actually a real word.

“What is the word that starts with S, ends with E, and contains A? → SAEA”

Then when I said that’s not a word and you gave me the answer already, no fun, it said

“I do not have access to confirm that word.”

I realize the strong anti cryptocurrency sentiment on HN for reasons unclear to me, but this would be a great time for Steam and itch to accept cryptocurrency.

It’s bizarre to me that this headline isn’t from years ago. I think Apple’s conservative/cautious approach to slow, methodical, incremental change may now pu them in a game of catch up.

I chunk the documents and use Elasticsearch to store the vectors. On a laptop with 8GB of GPU I can have a pretty large context window and not hallucinate.

Nice! Will have to give it a go, looks interesting. Thanks for sharing.

How are you dealing with documents that exceed the context window? Chunking an db vectorization? One issue with some approaches is the Paragraph 40 that references Paragraph 6 in a document but the LLM doesn’t really have direct capability to “remember” that reference.

I spent months working on a dating website. Had Stripe configured, spent the whole time testing with it. Published the site, swapped Stripe to production, and boom, account was closed/banned.

According to their own documentation, dating sites are indeed allowed, so long as there's no adult content. The site I built didn't allow adult content. I argued my case, provided the TOS as well as showed that I had features built into the site to prevent that sort of stuff. Still banned. The next step was to go for CCBill, etc. But they all charge a ~$2,000 setup fee. Not happening.

It had so many features built into it, and was by far my favorite project. Sadly, I just unpublished it and it will probably forever sit in my project folder unused.

Why not Square? Why not crypto? I realize HN kinda hates crypto as a group, but it solves your situation here, does it not? I realize it’s another step for users who don’t already have it, but I guess you need to determine whether it would cause enough friction to not get signups.
unstatusthequo commented on Compression culture is making you stupid and uninteresting   maalvika.substack.com/p/c... · Posted by u/kjhughes

Isn't the diminishing attention span the more conventional term to express the authors point, rather than "compression"? I think it was in culture of narcissism, a book from the late 1970s, that the author (Christopher Lasch) showed some research that the American attention span was rapidly diminishing since the 1960s or something. Its an old phenomenon and has predictably gone much worse the more attention-sucking tech we get.

I see people of all ages saying stuff like "I don't have the patience to watch a full movie uninterrupted". I think its the same thing.

PS. didn't have time to read the huge article, can you summarise?

unstatusthequo · a month ago
tldr summary of the article for those who need compression:

- Compression culture reduces rich experience to bullet points, treating depth as inefficiency. It ignores how oral traditions, medieval manuscript copying and university disputations built understanding through immersion, repetition and shared struggle.

- Today’s attention economy rewards fast consumption and skimming, reshaping our brains for distraction. True growth—skill, wisdom, character—emerges only through patient repetition, sitting with complexity and the struggle that resists compression.
