univerio commented on Residential Networking over Telephone   computer.rip/2025-02-02-r... · Posted by u/zdw

It's tangential to the topic (though mentioned in the article towards the end) so I'll be lazy and ask the crowd here: What's the current state of the art in powerline networking?

I have an application to network a couple of outbuildings. I don't have tremendous bandwidth needs (1Gbps would be glorious, 100Mbps would be fine). I would prefer wired connections for reliability and privacy. I would prefer not to trench and run fiber. The outbuildings already have electrical service from a central panel. Powerline networking might be a good fit.

There's a lot of consumer stuff out there. I'd like something a little more geared toward an industrial, commercial, or service provider use. (Analogously, think of the difference between using a dumb Netgear switch versus a managed name-brand managed switch.)

Edit: I appreciate the feedback I'm hearing here. This is exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to hear. Sorry to hijack HN for my personal needs like this!

If you have coax, I've found MoCA to be more reliable than powerline.

Do people really use bisect in their professional life?

Can you sensibly use it without an enforcement of every PR being squashed, as otherwise you have not working, half baked commits all the time while bisecting? And you can’t compile, not even saying about stating if your bug is still reproducible or not.

univerio · 2 years ago
Yes! But for me it's very rare (< 1/yr) and I'm like a kid in a toy store every time I get to bust it out. My employer uses squash commits so that's not a problem for us, but you're right that commits far enough back will be unlikely to be in a buildable state.

What is going on with the DNS name resolution here? Can somebody please share the resolved IP address?
univerio · 2 years ago
It seems to resolve against 1.1.1.1 but not 8.8.8.8.

For me, it will charge but not power the dock for playing on a TV.
univerio · 4 years ago
There's a specific PD profile (15V IIRC) that your charger needs in order to be able to power the dock, and older MacBook chargers didn't have it.

Even if I dont have signatures in my code, can I use it to get stdlib/gems signatures?
univerio · 4 years ago
stdlib rbis are shipped with Sorbet. A limited selection of gem RBIs are available at https://github.com/sorbet/sorbet-typed.
univerio commented on Tuple: Pair Programming Tool for macOS   tuple.app/... · Posted by u/gk1

I really like using tuple, but there’s a couple of things I’d really like to see:

- an idea of how much bandwidth it’s currently using or needs. I often find if I’m on a patchy connection it’s unclear how changing the settings will have an effect - make the video face stuff more prominent, especially for multiple monitors. I work 100% remote so when pairing I like to put my Co-workers full size on my second screen while I work on the primary screen, which helps us feel more connected.

univerio · 4 years ago
+1 on making video better. The janky video feature feels like such an afterthought compared to the impeccable screensharing/pairing feature. I've had to resort to using Tuple with Zoom just for the video sometimes because the webcam freezes for no reason.

I'll also offer one related piece of feedback: the "calling" metaphor for initiating a session is quite awkward. Compared to Zoom, where you share a link/code once and then you're free to join/leave the room, in Tuple you have to ask the other person to call you every time you drop; this in particular does not play well with the forced version upgrades -- you ask the other person to call you out-of-band, and you answer, except oops, you need to upgrade Tuple, so you upgrade and restart Tuple, and now Tuple has forgotten about the last call so now you have to ask the other person to call you out-of-band again! This is a UX wart that I'd love to see fixed!

"...she had acquired, somehow, New Life Dreams, which had to do with Conspicuous Consumption and Keeping Up and being Visibly Awesome..."

I was thinking the same thing: geeze, isn't there anything between virtue signalling early retirement and conspicuous consumption?

It does read a bit absurd with the over-the-top proper nouns, but this being the author's description of their past beliefs led me to interpret this as their being self-critical about the less nuanced opinions they once held about their lifestyle, rather than seriously looking down their nose at the people who have chosen a different lifestyle.

65W Apple charger.... My Lenovo 65W USB-C charger had no issues at all.
univerio · 5 years ago
The Switch dock requires the 15V PD profile, which the (old) 61W adapter from 2016 did not support, but the newer 61W adapter from 2018 does.

I assume it's doing `(N-2)(N-3)/2 + 2N - 3` instead of `N(N-1)/2` due to overflow concerns? But couldn't `(N-2)(N-3)` also possibly overflow, just supporting a larger range of `N`?
univerio commented on Brain research on boys’ preference for video games and girls’ for social media   wsj.com/articles/girls-vs... · Posted by u/bookofjoe
derefr · 6 years ago
There are plenty of games "for girls" (the hidden-object and life-simulation genres are almost exclusively consumed by women, regardless of theming) but they're not marketed with quite the high-budget superbowl ad-campaign effort that games "for boys" are.

I've encountered the situation many times where I'll find out one of my female friends doesn't play video games. I'll ask why, and—disregarding the people who just don't like to spend time cooped up indoors—it'll usually end out that she's just never been introduced to a game she's enjoyed. Upon introducing her to a game or two in the genres more traditionally targeted at women, she'll be just about as likely as any of my male friends to gradually evolve from there into an avid gamer: one for whom "gaming" is now counted among their serious hobbies; one who might be excited to dedicate a weekend to full "hardcore" engagement with a new game.

In other words, for these ladies, it was 100% a market education problem: the companies making these products weren't managing to make their target audience aware of them.

univerio · 6 years ago
I assume an example of a "life-simulation" game is the Sims? What are "hidden-object" games?
