This is pretty much dead on. I live in a rural part of the US and there are tons of old, worked-on trucks. The idea that there might be an all-electric f150 hanging out in 40 years is, frankly, laughable.

I know a lot of city kids think trucks are some obnoxious luxury good, but they're basically a functional requirement in most of the (very large) country.

Why is it laughable? I'm not following your argument.

It appears not to be. Here are the ones in Santa Clara County:

- Milpitas

- Mountain View

- Palo Alto Santa

- San Jose

- Sunnyvale

- Unincorporated Area (Lexington Hills area, overlapping Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties)

I don't know why it says "Palo Alto Santa"

Edit: I guess it's "Palo Alto Santa" to disambiguate between Palo Alto, which is in Santa Clara County, and East Palo Alto, which is in San Mateo County (BTW the westmost point of East Palo Alto is east of the westmost point of Palo Alto, but the eastmost point of East Palo Alto is not east of the eastmost point of Palo Alto).

Looking at the city limits, I don't understand why East Palo Alto isn't called North Palo Alto instead.

I am curious how these work for people with common kinds of colorblindness. The author mentions at the end that they likely don't work for that case, but they don't seem to have spent much time thinking about it.

Would it be possible to generate ones that _would_ work for specific kinds of colorblindness? Or is the entire concept doomed due to the specific way(s) that colorblind eyes are messed up?

I have red-green weakness but only saw a lighter green around the circle as it became smaller.

I have a sure fire method for detecting Canadians out in the wild. Pay close attention to how they pronounce the word “resources”. If you hear the letter Z in there then they are probably Canadian.

Last year we bought a car.

While not being a petrol head I was still living in a lala land where you could buy a brand new car for 10k EUR. Nothing fancy, just "a car". Obviously it turned out to be not true.

After some digging it turned out that in the last 10 years the price of cars went double. Literally double. Same car, like Fiat Panda, with the same engine and configuration, that ten years was worth one potato is now worth exactly two potato.

Long story short, the entry level car now costs close to 25k EUR. [1]

But here's the kicker.

While subvenstions seem to fail in most cases for regular people - like gvt giving people money to buy apartements equals to apartments being equally more expensive - it seems to work wonders for automotive thanks to Chinese.

EU offers up to 10k EUR subvention for electric cars and with that in mind you can get something like BYD Dolphin for slighly less than 20k EUR. Which is mind blowing. The car is comparable to Volvo XC40. Of course this is just an example and there is plentiful of other options.

[1] If you're not familiar or comfortable with EUR just think 1 EUR is 1 USD and you'll be fine.

I'd never seen the word "subvention" before. Today I learned it's another way to say "subsidy".

I started signing my cards with an all caps "ASK FOR PHOTO ID" 30 years ago. It raised a few questions when I would travel to the US and use them there, but was never refused a transaction.

I've been signing "CHECK ID :)" for several years now and it's only a few times a year that someone notices.

I’ve lived in and around mountain towns my whole life. There’s a relatively simple solution to this: taxation. If you don’t live there full time, you get to pay hefty taxes to the city/county. How do you verify this? Voter registration. If you’re not registered to vote at that address, you pay massive taxes. So, if you _really_ want to have a second home there, fine, but it’s going to be much less expensive for people who actually live there
tricolon · 2 years ago
Not everyone can vote or is registered to vote.

I have to wonder what would have happened had the same thing occurred in the US. I'm really struggling to think of a scenario where the police have a warrant that says "$THING is on computers at this company, go get them" and you have literally any chance of convincing them that $THING is not anywhere.

I could see them taking all the computers then six months later saying "here you can have them back now, come pick them up at the precinct and here's the storage bill."

tricolon · 3 years ago
I would half expect them to sue the computers for obstruction of justice... and then just keep them.

Interesting. I'm in my thirties, too and phone calls between me and close peers are quite common. Business also. Less so, than a decade ago though.

> We've kept our phones on vibrate for a decade and a half now

I get that you prefer not to call people. But why are you less interested in incoming calls (could be important)?

tricolon · 3 years ago
At least for me, most incoming calls are spam. If it's important, I will either anticipate it or the caller will leave a voicemail. In the past several months, I think I've received one unanticipated call from a friend.
