Couple of side notes that are very interesting:

Palo Alto detected the SolarWinds problem early, but failed to notify the Cyber Threat Alliance which it spearheaded, significantly exacerbating the impact: https://www.cfr.org/blog/most-tools-failed-detect-solarwinds...

The PE firm that basically ran SolarWinds into the ground (Thoma Bravo) bought Proofpoint in 2021, not too long after the debacle became public.

Thoma Bravo is poison. They took over LogRhythm when I was working there and ruined it. If your employer is ever bought by then, polish your resume.

My guess would be an undiagnosed case of HLH, which leads to your NK cells not functioning properly.

https://www.dana-farber.org/childhood-hemophagocytic-lymphoh...

I'm betting the vaccine triggered the cytokine storm, rather than a virus itself which the most common triggering event. It's such a rare disease that by the time it's diagnosed, it's too late to intervene with steroids and chemo drugs to stop the runaway immune system.

tolstoshev commented on Numbers to Know for Managing (Software Teams)   staysaasy.com/management/... · Posted by u/_njuy

500 - the number of employees before your CEO becomes a political figure

1000 - the size of company when you’re at risk of losing accountability

From my own experience and other sources (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35206141) those numbers seem too high. I've seen this happen 2 times in front of my eyes while both companies were in the 100-200 range.

One of them managed to go to the next level and adapt to the new reality the other is still struggling.

Yep, Dunbar's number is what you are looking at for this phase change: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number

So around the 150-200 mark.

tolstoshev commented on The price of eggs in America cannot be explained by inflation alone   economist.com/united-stat... · Posted by u/helsinkiandrew

"I don't understand why you buy eggs at seven cents a piece in Malta and sell them for five cents." "I do it to make a profit." "But how can you make a profit? You lose two cents an egg." "But I make a profit of three and a quarter cents an egg by selling them at four and a quarter cents an egg to the people in Malta I buy them from for seven cents an egg. Of course, I don't make the profit. The syndicate makes the profit. And everybody has a share." Yossarian felt he was beginning to understand. "And the people you sell the eggs to at four and a quarter cents a piece make a profit of two and three quarter cents a piece when they sell them back to you at seven cents a piece. Is that right? Why don't you sell the eggs directly to you and eliminate the people you buy them from?" "Because I am the people I buy them from," Milo explained. "I make a profit of three and a quarter cents a piece when I sell them to me and a profit of two and three quarter cents apiece when I buy them back from me. That's a total profit of six cents an egg. I lose only two cents an egg when I sell them to the mess halls at five cents apiece, and that's how I can make a profit buying eggs for seven cents apiece and selling them for five cents apiece. I pay only one cent a piece at the hen when I buy them in Sicily." "In Malta," Yossarian corrected. "You buy your eggs in Malta, not Sicily." Milo chortled proudly. "I don't buy eggs from Malta," he confessed... "I buy them in Sicily at one cent apiece and transfer them to Malta secretly at four and a half cents apiece in order to get the price of eggs up to seven cents when people come to Malta looking for them."

I also feel the VR enthusiast community rarely has an honest conversation about the size and scale of the nausea problem. I'm not sure its just a case of throw ever increasing fidelity at the picture and audio etc - I think its the fundamental issue of walking motion being perceived by eyes, but inner ear balance indicate you are stationary. Even at 600fps and 20k of resolution per eye this disconnect between visually perceived motion and actual motion is still going to exist.

AR obviously doesn't have these issues and I think will one day be great, but VR could have this problem for decades.

Make no mistake: the Online Safety Bill has absolutely nothing to do with protecting children. End-to-end encryption is the first line of defence against government approved mass surveillance. If it falls, the rest will follow. It will only be a short period until the operation is expanded under the guise of additional "protections" against the citizens.

We know the bearing was on fire for 20+ miles before it derailed, and it passed through at least one hotbox detector in that condition without being detected. On average, such detectors are placed every 10-20 miles. The one in East Palestine spotted the problem but it was too late to prevent the derailment.

Maybe a start would be to adjust regulation such that detectors need to be placed with higher frequency. ECP is a nice idea, but that's a last ditch effort and not a generalized solution.

tolstoshev · 3 years ago
Why don't they put the hotbox detectors on the trains themselves? I'm cynically assuming cost?
