It's only 141 TCF vendor(s) and 69 ad partner(s), with no way to reject all, and you have to manually click on every "vendor" to remove consent.

It's the second or third time I see this "managed by Google compliant with IAB" (note: not with GDPR)

This is super infuriating. I wish there was a way to offshore the effort and work needed to toggle each option off to the culprit website. Perhaps when website A presents you with such hostile prompts, take their contact email, and subscribe it with automation to each of the vendors. I'm just too tired of this shit.

What would the third brick layer say if in fact they were building a prison? Or something less positive? I don't really understand who is the one I'm supposed to emulate here.

"I'm building the foundation to course correct individuals and reintegrate them into society".

Every VP building the most cancerous product will think they are making the world a better place. It's just a matter of perspective.

The real test would have been to use some software that the author uses frequently, and see if there's any decrease in speed when removing all the icons. I'm pretty sure, even when not pleasant, they work as heavy visual cues to find the item quicker.

Icons are also very useful if you're trying to use software in a language that you're learning, becoming the common language bridge.

Yesterday twitter feed was showing me all sorts of people executing this idea fully end to end: creating endless stream of content, selling whatever product or idea, presented as fully human content. Of course with fake AI people, engaging in content to make it look real, and using hooks or sexualized content to make it grab more attention.

Im unsure what the final outcome out of this is, but it makes me sad that we're about to see an explosion of fake content on the internet indistinguishable from real people so soon, if not already, for pure profit, where everything is allowed.

I have been thinking about this a lot ever since I played a game called "Balatro". In this game nothing extraordinary happens in terms of computing - some computations get done, some images are shuffled around on the screen, the effects are sparse. The hardware requirements aren't much by modern standards, but still, this game could be ported 1:1 to a machine with Pentium II with a 3dfx graphics card. And yet it demands so much more - not a lot by today standards, but still. I am tempted to try to run it on a 2010 netbook to see if it even boots up.

The game is ported to switch, and it does run slow when you do big combos. You can feel it visually to the point that it's a bit annoying.

The hedonic treadmill runs both ways. I'd venture many people successful on paper are driven by the need to escape something, for me, it's financial insecurity even though I was never poor nor am I close to it right now. If I were to be as financially successful as this fellow, I think I would soon find myself back to having the same fear\ or finding something to substitute it, regardless, the feeling or mood would be the same

What's the general recommendation for when this is the case?

I'm the one running itch.io, so here's some more context for you:

From what I can tell, some person made a fan page for an existing Funko Pop video game (Funko Fusion), with links to the official site and screenshots of the game. The BrandShield software is probably instructed to eradicate all "unauthorized" use of their trademark, so they sent reports independently to our host and registrar claiming there was "fraud and phishing" going on, likely to cause escalation instead of doing the expected DMCA/cease-and-desist. Because of this, I honestly think they're the malicious actor in all of this. Their website, if you care: https://www.brandshield.com/

About 5 or 6 days ago, I received these reports on our host (Linode) and from our registrar (iwantmyname). I expressed my disappointment in my responses to both of them but told them I had removed the page and disabled the account. Linode confirmed and closed the case. iwantmyname never responded. This evening, I got a downtime alert, and while debugging, I noticed that the domain status had been set to "serverHold" on iwantmyname's domain panel. We have no other abuse reports from iwantmyname other than this one. I'm assuming no one on their end "closed" the ticket, so it went into an automatic system to disable the domain after some number of days.

I've been trying to get in touch with them via their abuse and support emails, but no response likely due to the time of day, so I decided to "escalate" the issue myself on social media.

I wanted to take the time to thank you for the service you provide. itch.io is unvaluable to the indie community, and I'm perplexed when I see some devs complain about issues like this. Thabks for all your work.

This just reminded me that the GeForce Experience (which is recommended to use the recording functions, and keep updating the drivers), requires an account. And the software is unable to keep your account logged in. It's outrageous to pay so much for a graphics card to later have this experience.

The cookie policy is a stupid value-signalling stunt with only negative real-life effects. The correct way of handling the problem would have been through request headers and browser settings, or simply, use the existing option of either allowing or disallowing cookies, and put this option on a per-site basis and a bit more into the users face..
thn-gap · a year ago
When I'm on my phone and a website shows the ads popup, I open it in Brave, which just blocks everything. That's the current implementation of "do not track" settings.

Maybe stop doing stupid shit that will legally require you to inform users that you're about to sell/share everything you know about them to 3rd parties?

I fail to understand companies that display page after page of cookies and tracking stuff for you to approve don't see the issue with their actions or the insanity of "allow us to share data with our 1500 partners". Does no one in these business look at this and go: "Hey, why do we need 50 different tracking tools" or "Why do we share customer data with over a thousand other businesses?".

When you actually read what these pop-ups says, then you understand why they are there, and why the problem with the laws isn't that it's annoying, but that it is not much more restrictive.

thn-gap · a year ago
What I always find funny about this, is that the popup is presented with "We value your privacy", followed by "allow us to share data with >500 partners".

I wished that such statements had some value greater than nil.
