thn-gap commented on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority   twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack... · Posted by u/turrini

I have been thinking about this a lot ever since I played a game called "Balatro". In this game nothing extraordinary happens in terms of computing - some computations get done, some images are shuffled around on the screen, the effects are sparse. The hardware requirements aren't much by modern standards, but still, this game could be ported 1:1 to a machine with Pentium II with a 3dfx graphics card. And yet it demands so much more - not a lot by today standards, but still. I am tempted to try to run it on a 2010 netbook to see if it even boots up.

The game is ported to switch, and it does run slow when you do big combos. You can feel it visually to the point that it's a bit annoying.

The hedonic treadmill runs both ways. I'd venture many people successful on paper are driven by the need to escape something, for me, it's financial insecurity even though I was never poor nor am I close to it right now. If I were to be as financially successful as this fellow, I think I would soon find myself back to having the same fear\ or finding something to substitute it, regardless, the feeling or mood would be the same

What's the general recommendation for when this is the case?

I'm the one running itch.io, so here's some more context for you:

From what I can tell, some person made a fan page for an existing Funko Pop video game (Funko Fusion), with links to the official site and screenshots of the game. The BrandShield software is probably instructed to eradicate all "unauthorized" use of their trademark, so they sent reports independently to our host and registrar claiming there was "fraud and phishing" going on, likely to cause escalation instead of doing the expected DMCA/cease-and-desist. Because of this, I honestly think they're the malicious actor in all of this. Their website, if you care: https://www.brandshield.com/

About 5 or 6 days ago, I received these reports on our host (Linode) and from our registrar (iwantmyname). I expressed my disappointment in my responses to both of them but told them I had removed the page and disabled the account. Linode confirmed and closed the case. iwantmyname never responded. This evening, I got a downtime alert, and while debugging, I noticed that the domain status had been set to "serverHold" on iwantmyname's domain panel. We have no other abuse reports from iwantmyname other than this one. I'm assuming no one on their end "closed" the ticket, so it went into an automatic system to disable the domain after some number of days.

I've been trying to get in touch with them via their abuse and support emails, but no response likely due to the time of day, so I decided to "escalate" the issue myself on social media.

I wanted to take the time to thank you for the service you provide. itch.io is unvaluable to the indie community, and I'm perplexed when I see some devs complain about issues like this. Thabks for all your work.

This just reminded me that the GeForce Experience (which is recommended to use the recording functions, and keep updating the drivers), requires an account. And the software is unable to keep your account logged in. It's outrageous to pay so much for a graphics card to later have this experience.

The cookie policy is a stupid value-signalling stunt with only negative real-life effects. The correct way of handling the problem would have been through request headers and browser settings, or simply, use the existing option of either allowing or disallowing cookies, and put this option on a per-site basis and a bit more into the users face..

When I'm on my phone and a website shows the ads popup, I open it in Brave, which just blocks everything. That's the current implementation of "do not track" settings.

Maybe stop doing stupid shit that will legally require you to inform users that you're about to sell/share everything you know about them to 3rd parties?

I fail to understand companies that display page after page of cookies and tracking stuff for you to approve don't see the issue with their actions or the insanity of "allow us to share data with our 1500 partners". Does no one in these business look at this and go: "Hey, why do we need 50 different tracking tools" or "Why do we share customer data with over a thousand other businesses?".

When you actually read what these pop-ups says, then you understand why they are there, and why the problem with the laws isn't that it's annoying, but that it is not much more restrictive.

What I always find funny about this, is that the popup is presented with "We value your privacy", followed by "allow us to share data with >500 partners".

I wished that such statements had some value greater than nil.

Same insanity at Google. Doesn't matter that you are the only team member at this location, it's 3 mandatory days per week in office, or else your VP starts getting notifications.

A cherry on top, HR scripts don't properly account for partial vacation weeks, so if you have 3 vacation days in a week, you are still supposed to be in office 3 days a week, or else your VP gets notified.

Most teams in Europe either don't care, or can't use the badging data to affect performance because whatever local laws. I'm glad that for once they didn't fully enforce policies worldwide because some VP in the US is butthurt that their reports don't want to show up at the office.

Are there any examples of white hat hackers or similar fighting against stuff like this? Too much cyber harm is done to benign businesses and people already, so I wonder if there's ever some "for a good cause".

I think Office Space summed up the problem nicely:

"Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?

Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.

Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?

Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.

Bob Slydell: Eight?

Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired."

Most companies only care about the next quarter, or next investor call. Quality be damned, cut corners, work late. It's a never-ending series of death marches.

I watched Office Space for the first time when I was a teenager many years ago. It's funny how much my perception of the movie changed and how much it resonates with my work now, specially since the last years. One difference is that I have 10 different managers, which makes me dissociate enough from work without the need of any hypnotist.

I discovered bouldering recently, which is the latest sport i found that feels more fun than a chore, so I find myself wanting to go more often than not.

Use your peers, friends and meetups to take any chance to try a new sport. I found that most sports I tried they are actually fun, and I had just ignored them.
