Because I don’t want to give google any money. And mullvad has many other uses besides blocking YT ads.

Doing this in the context of blockchain is probably a filter. Only folks who don't think his is all a scam anyway would apply there. So you filter for getting the more gullible folks. That are more likely to have a wallet somewhere.

Just like nigerian prince scams are always full of typos and grammar issues. Because only those not recognizing that as obvious scams click the link and thereby this is a filter to increase signal to noise for the scammers.

Someone applying to a blockchain company is probably also more likely to own a valuable crypto wallet the attacker might be able to access.

WatchOS 26 has rendered my Apple Watch almost useless. It's gone from lasting a whole day including 2 cycling 'workouts' for my commute and the occasional lunch time run (or gym session before work) to now being at 40% battery by the time I make my mid-morning coffee and dead before I get home.

I don't use most of the 'smart' features anyway - I'm mostly using the fitness features - so I'll probably switch to a Garmin at some point.

Have you tried restarting your watch? I noticed heavily increased battery drain after the update too, until I restarted the watch and everything turned normal again.

There's a lot of benefits you get by mentoring. When you have to teach you're forced to think more deeply about problems, see it from different angles, and revisit questions you had when learning but tabled at that time. That last one is pretty common. There's always questions you have when learning that you have to avoid because you don't have the knowledge to answer yet, because they would take you down too deep a rabbit hole. But later you have the experience to navigate those problems.

Personally, I've learned a ton while teaching. It's given me many new ideas and insights. But I'm obviously not alone in this. Even Feynman talks about how teaching results in better learning

I don't think you have to convince the parent poster or seniors developers in general. You have to convince their employers that this is a valuable use of time.

They never really had much of a reason to create a competitor. There where already plenty of alternatives once online shopping/payments became a thing.

Here you could do "cash on delivery", credit/debit card, account transfers (yes even across banks, it not as big an issue as US banks makes it) or you could send stamps (not a popular options).

There was never a need for PayPal or PayPal style services. These days it's safe to assume that people have a debit card (or MobilePay in the case of Denmark).

thirdsun · 4 months ago
I strongly disagree. The main advantage of Paypal and the reason for its popularity in Germany was the fact that it provided instant payments at a time when credit cards were very uncommon.

Cash on delivery was a huge pain since you had to potentially large amounts of cash ready to hand over to your postman upon delivery. That's the opposite of convenient.

Alternatively you could pay by bank wire transfer, which of course led to an additional delay of a day or two until your transfer actually arrived at the sellers bank account. Nobody wants to deal with barriers like these in ecommerce. Paypal was a godsend back then. Remember, barely anyone had a credit card in those days in Germany.

? IBAN transactions are instant and free.

All three of my banking apps offer adresse books.

why couldnt i sent money back? I see the sender and the IBAN

I can even in some cases cancell payments

where are you at?

me france germany italy and switzerland.

Are you from the states or canada? The parent talked about europe.

> ? IBAN transactions are instant and free.

Instant transactions are a very recent development and are only starting to become common because banks are required by law to support them for free come October. Up until rather recently instant SEPA transfers were often either not supported or came with additional fees attached.

a beloved tool from Potsdam, Germany. Best in market for planning routes. I always had my grievances with their lack of premium features that where catered towards ambitious cyclists that use their phone instead of a GPS though. They could have had all my money of they would have had a customizable UI (or at least a bunch of skins to choose from). So much data collected and no useful HUD. Just copying what Garmin etc have (e.g. audio indicators for next turns) would have made a big difference...

> lack of premium features that where catered towards ambitious cyclists that use their phone instead of a GPS

I think that's a very small target group. Most ambitious cyclists will use a dedicated bike computer rather than a smartphone. And rightfully so, if you ask me.

ANT+ appears to be dying and Garmin has started moving away from it. Although I'm sure they'll still support it for several more product generations.

ANT+ is still very much present in the cycling world and likely won't go anywhere. While most sensors and devices will also support bluetooth it seems to be a much more fragile and problematic connection. From my own experience I'd always opt for ANT+.

Is it me or does it seem like the internet era has taken away incumbent advantage and actually put incumbents at a massive disadvantage? I'm not here to attack or defend what Trudeau has actually done, only to posit the idea that once you become a leader in the political landscape there is a very effective machine whose only job is to attack you, personally, as much as possible anywhere you're perceived to be vulnerable. If you've followed US politics for the last decade the perfect example of this is "tan suit".

I think the problem is that a large and growing part of the population is in a constant state of dissatisfaction, if not downright anger, often being fed or demanding simple solutions to complex problems. At that point it doesn't seem to matter if those solutions actually work as long as they promise change. And when it becomes clear they won't or require long term planning people will just demand new leadership and the cycle continues.

Let's face it. Most problems require patient approaches. Often changes that are made won't show their effects until years or decades later. Unfortunately that encourages short term thinking towards the next election in government and population alike.
