Isn't Australia's essential housing problem a lack of actual housing, relative to would-be buyers?

If so, how would this help?

theothertimcook · 4 days ago
It doesn’t, it just allows people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to take on a massive mortgage to do just that.

Housing in Australia is cooked, tax settings and lack of oversight mean it’s basically an investment product that people can live in.

Any policy to reign in the silliness would crash the economy and smash a significant number of paper millionaires.

Imagine one of the geographically largest county on the planet having a “housing crisis” because investors need their interests protected.

I've considered these, but I find that a refurb MFF PC with an 8th-10th gen i5 provides way more bang for the buck in a package that isn't much larger (typically 7in x 7in x 2in), with out of the box OS and software support.

These are popular due to lower power useage, mine idles at around 4w, the power supply is a wall wart style and doesn’t have a bulky mid cord transformer, it supports 2 SSDs and is around 120mm x 120mm, almost completely silent and cost me around 190AUD over 12 months ago. Locally I would struggle to get an 8th gen USFF box for that kind of money.

They’re amazing bits of tech for the price.

In many countries you need a valid government ID document to activate a mobile service which means burners do not really exist in those places.

Unless you bought a pixel, graphene’d it and then paid a homeless person to activate a pre-paid data only sim which you would top up with vouchers paid in cash and used a von and international voip service…

A lot of effort though

I guess size is a factor but also population density, does QLD have way less people per sq.m and does that make it easier to implement stuff like this?
theothertimcook · 13 days ago
QLD population density is something like 2000x lower than that of Tokyo…

Our public transport systems are so bad.

The Brisbane airport rail connection runs about half as many train services as the Perth airport, which seems about half the amount of travellers each year as Brisbane airport. It’s crazy, double the fare burden, half the patronage, and stuck in a monopoly contract until 2036.

Don’t even get me started on the stupid busways, gimped light rails, the new “metro” and the endless amount poured into the motorways that they have been widening one lane at a time for 3 decades…

Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty is a 2021 book by Patrick Radden Keefe.

The author tells how the early sacklers, while working in a psychiatric hospital, were so horrified by electroshock therapy and the increasing willingness of other doctors to prescribe lobotomies, they they purchased a rabbit to test compounds on, allegedly stumping across Thorazine based on something one of them remembered from medical school.

This eventually lead to Purdue Pharma and the opioid crisis…

Also interesting, the man behind the Novel prize, Alfred Nobel, gained wealth and fame by inventing dynamite, critic argue that the novel prize was a way to rescue his reputation after having created explosives which would go on to be used as weapons..

They haven’t forced anything, someone from dreamworks wrote a blog post about “inclusive” language and a couple of foundations have adopted it as recommendations.

Part of the “woke” problem is the cycle of performatory outrage in response to performative identity politics.

If you want to make fluffy language in your work do it if you don’t, don’t

theothertimcook commented on DuckStation author now actively blocking Arch Linux builds   github.com/stenzek/duckst... · Posted by u/rubin55

“ I originally provided this an alternative to the broken AUR packages.

However, it seems that Arch users would rather use broken packages and keep complaining to me instead of their packager. I specifically forbid packages for DuckStation (see README.md), and there's no way to request removal of these packages without handing my details over to a distribution I want nothing to do with.

So this is step one. Next step will be removing Linux support entirely, because I'm sick of the headaches and hacks for an operating system that only compromises 2% of the userbase, and I don't even use myself. But I'm hoping the Linux community will be reasonable, because as someone giving up my free time and not being compensated in any way, I shouldn't have to deal with this.

Just grep the source for "wayland" and you'll see what I mean.”
