From what I gather, the circumstances for the “laptop” to be obtained by a legally blind store an improbably large distance away from anywhere hunter Biden would be, is among the first of many red flags that this is a disinformation attempt.

Part of it getting past scrutiny, is playing on the assumption that people will cheat.

I mean sure, but this stupidly? After Trump used taxpayer money to stay at his hotels publicly?

Add in they paid $85 for data recovery on 3 water logged Apple laptops... I’ve paid for data recovery services on drives, it’s a lot more than 85 bucks...

I wonder how much they're automating the protection of their auto-generated playlists (if at all) - for example, does it know if I look at an auto-generated playlist, create a new one, then fill it with all the same songs in the same order?
techdevangelist · 5 years ago
On the desktop client you can select all songs on a playlist, right click and add to a new playlist. This new lis shows up as able to be transferred with SongShift. I did it last night as a PoC, I’ve done it it previously to customize some Spotify playlists here and there and will be my method going forward to keep lists in sync between services now. Just in case they try to pull access again.

I just had a colonoscopy a few weeks ago because of some minor bleeding. Ended up just being hemorrhoids and a small polyp. Definitely worth having the peace of mind.

The worst part or the prep was not sleeping much that night because I was up until 3am. Watching TV most of the night was relaxing, though. After the procedure I took it easy all day while the propofol effects wore off.

Don’t wait to have a colonoscopy. The prep isn’t that difficult!

techdevangelist · 5 years ago
I’ve got Crohn’s so I’ve had my share of colonoscopies, completely agree that the procedure is a breeze. And now that propofol is the standard it’s that much better, the older versed/morphine combo really hammered you. The prep is the worst bit and it’s better if you prep well for the prep; wet wipes, bidet, water bottle anything, some good reading material and a good even free from other disruptions (you’ll be disrupted enough...)

I think this kind of "technical debt" is penny-wise-but-pound-foolish but I can see where it fits in their scheme of things.

It seems that one reason for management not to be worried is that the sums are so small. Upgrading security in all their facilities would probably cost $9MM which they could easily cover from operating cash (they had about USD 3B) last year.

If I were a bank though I'd be concerned that this was merely the visible top of a large iceberg of problems.

techdevangelist · 5 years ago
Yes, stalling auditors and engaging in a coverup to hide information from auditors tends to draw some harsh findings. It’s 9M that’s known to be missing, it could be much larger (or smaller). But generally deceiving your customers isn’t the best way to keep them coming back.

My local Korean grocery store and Ace Hardware both have KN95 masks in stock for $2 to $5 a piece. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've heard of them just being available in stores elsewhere too.

We have the flat folded KN95 masks in Kroger costing 3 for $15

/me nervously glances at all the production infrastructure I manage that's still on JDK 7 or 8.

I've just recently been able to upgrade some things to JDK 11.

techdevangelist · 6 years ago
Lucky! We still have a mix of 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8; our recent big upgrade came from moving a few apps from 1.6 to 1.8... we’ll get to this jdk in about 15 years.

I was working on a blood test startup when Theranos imploded. We spoke with a number of their top people about working with us. The truth was that while some of the Theranos team had valuable skills/connections (e.g. getting the devices deployed into retail), the entire saga had tainted their reputations and made it so difficult to raise capital for a legit device (we did two tests while Theranos claimed to do over 200 tests) to the point we couldn’t engage with any of them.

That’s a similar response to accounting personal who worked for Arthur Anderson, the one I know personally leaves a hole in his resume during the tenure and would explain it if asked. He said it was a pretty common tactic, even for those that had no roll with Enron.

It can be worth trying to set the file to immutable; chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

So what popped the bubble?
techdevangelist · 6 years ago
I think it’s interesting it popped 24 hours prior to this story, like reporters reaching out for comment triggered a change of strategy. Pure speculation of course, the holiday weekend tends to cause sell offs as well.
