Is there any way to coerce the Indian government to take action on this? Looking at YouTube videos where these scammers literally run corporate offices to steal from old and financially vulnerable people is heartbreaking.

But even that perspective that you ascribe to India is reductive. It seems in your view, India are the only ones who understand complexity, the West are just arrogant morons. In reality, everyone's equally just looking out for themselves. In the West we don't care about Kashmir, in India people don't care about Ukraine. It's the same, until one day India will discover that Russia is useless against China and the US and the West are not. And then there will be a realignment. When it happens it won't be about any fancy ideals, it'll just be interests realigning.

This binary choice of aligning and then trapping oneself into being subservient to one sides is exactly what India is trying to avoid.

Ukraine may be fending off Russians with help of the west and may even push Russia all the way back, but their families, cultural & human capital, infrastructure are all being eroded, significantly. Future generations of Ukraine will have to pay this debt.

India voluntarily making a choice which would bring it in the cross-hairs of China or the West would be a catastrophic failure of imagination.

I consider this one of the more egalitarian moves Apple made, and naturally they made a robust profit on it as well.

Apple invented the modern slab-of-glass smartphone industry, and always shipped a high-quality charger and headphones with the iPhone, something which started with its ancestor the iPod.

As a result, everyone else had to sell... some kind of earbuds and charger. These didn't have to be good, but they did have to be in the box.

Apple had the margin to make these quality: you can get better earphones but not better chargers. Their competitors had to put the same type of object in the box, cutting into already slim margins and often shipping something which sounds bad, and that makes the iPhone look better.

But as the market leader, they had the ability to say "The best phone in the world (reality distortion field!) no longer comes with earbuds or a charger. We figure you have enough chargers, and probably like the headset you have, and if you want new ones, we sell them".

So everyone else can just drop the shipping of mandatory e-waste, just to keep up with the iPhone. It was a bad Nash equilibrium, and only the market leader was in a position to break it.

Feel free to discuss the missing headphone jack and the multibillion dollar AirPods platform in the replies!

Are Apple chargers really better than those shipped with Android devices?

It appears Dev and other such productivity users are a byproduct sales category for most display manufacturers. Gamers don't want 4K+ because their GPUs can only handle 1440 at ultra pro max quality, and TV customers are not interested in smaller displays because, you know, what she said.

Looks like we'll have to wait till GPUs can do 4K@120 to enjoy good monitors :)

LG makes 24” 4K monitors and 27” 5K. What are you looking for?

AFAIK, LG's 5K monitors are their UltraFine series which have very bad reviews from actual buyers.
teatree commented on Tell HN: SWIFT is not a payments transfer system    · Posted by u/atdrummond

Yes, though the closure of dollar clearance services by US and UK banks also stopped the large important payments, at least via the West.

There will still be some facility to do it via China, but China's largest banks are also baulking (mostly because of the rapidly imploding value of the Ruble meaning they don't trust Russian banks to actually send the requisite funds than any great moral imperative I expect by the result is the same), and any Chinese services still willing to co-operate are going to extract a very, very hefty tithe from the Russians to enable it.

teatree · 4 years ago
The assumption here is that Chinese banks operate with only a profit movie. Things don't work that way in China, the CCP could compel one or more Chinese banks to co-operate if it serves their geopolitical interests.

China would be keen on establishing and testing an alternative to SWIFT & CHIPS, the US stranglehold on financial systems, as they know the US would use it serve her geopolitical interests.

Looking at the number of countries sanctioned, there is no dearth of customers.

This reminds of Borg from Star Trek, more you use your weapons against them, faster they adapt.

This whole situation is so surreal and disappointing. I grew up on Star Trek and somehow I just though we had (almost) arrived in a post-war, federation-like world. We know things should be solved with words because otherwise there are only losers. It’s how we raise our kids.

I just keep thinking about how Jean Luc is looking down on us from orbit, slowly shaking his head whispering “Savages.”

teatree · 4 years ago
I relate so much to this. Star Trek shaped a lot of my world view. I wish we had more TV shows like that today.

But then, looking at some comments here cheering suffering of others and passing judgement reminds me of the episode 'encounter at far point', maybe Q was right after all.

I agree with the notion of not relying on Russian gas. We've built liquefied natural gas terminal (https://enmin.lrv.lt/en/strategic-projects/gas-sector/liquef...) 7 years ago as Russia has been using gas as a political weapon against us constantly. We will endure what we need to endure to help Ukraine and we hope that ordinary Russians will do the same.
teatree · 4 years ago
Are Baltic countries still importing natural gas from Russia or has is completely stopped?

The point is very much to create additional cost and disruption for the Russian economy. Namecheap’s step doesn’t do much in this regard, but perhaps it convinces other services to follow suit and stop doing business with Russian entities. After all, it’s the Russian economy that pays for the war. Whatever creates a competitive disadvantage for a Russian companies will subsequently harm their revenue stream and the tax they’re due.

For the record: Nobody with a sane state of mind believes that the Russian people are “evil” or guilty of their leadership’s atrocities in Ukraine. They just happen to be the subjects of an authoritarian government and an onslaught of propaganda. At best, one could say that far too many are complicit and too few stand up to Putin. But admittedly, it’s a tough ask for people to protest a government that murders journalists and poisons opposition politicians.

Did the Europeans stop buying natural gas from Russia?
