This binary choice of aligning and then trapping oneself into being subservient to one sides is exactly what India is trying to avoid.
Ukraine may be fending off Russians with help of the west and may even push Russia all the way back, but their families, cultural & human capital, infrastructure are all being eroded, significantly. Future generations of Ukraine will have to pay this debt.
India voluntarily making a choice which would bring it in the cross-hairs of China or the West would be a catastrophic failure of imagination.
Apple invented the modern slab-of-glass smartphone industry, and always shipped a high-quality charger and headphones with the iPhone, something which started with its ancestor the iPod.
As a result, everyone else had to sell... some kind of earbuds and charger. These didn't have to be good, but they did have to be in the box.
Apple had the margin to make these quality: you can get better earphones but not better chargers. Their competitors had to put the same type of object in the box, cutting into already slim margins and often shipping something which sounds bad, and that makes the iPhone look better.
But as the market leader, they had the ability to say "The best phone in the world (reality distortion field!) no longer comes with earbuds or a charger. We figure you have enough chargers, and probably like the headset you have, and if you want new ones, we sell them".
So everyone else can just drop the shipping of mandatory e-waste, just to keep up with the iPhone. It was a bad Nash equilibrium, and only the market leader was in a position to break it.
Feel free to discuss the missing headphone jack and the multibillion dollar AirPods platform in the replies!
Are Apple chargers really better than those shipped with Android devices?
Looks like we'll have to wait till GPUs can do 4K@120 to enjoy good monitors :)
There will still be some facility to do it via China, but China's largest banks are also baulking (mostly because of the rapidly imploding value of the Ruble meaning they don't trust Russian banks to actually send the requisite funds than any great moral imperative I expect by the result is the same), and any Chinese services still willing to co-operate are going to extract a very, very hefty tithe from the Russians to enable it.
China would be keen on establishing and testing an alternative to SWIFT & CHIPS, the US stranglehold on financial systems, as they know the US would use it serve her geopolitical interests.
Looking at the number of countries sanctioned, there is no dearth of customers.
This reminds of Borg from Star Trek, more you use your weapons against them, faster they adapt.
I just keep thinking about how Jean Luc is looking down on us from orbit, slowly shaking his head whispering “Savages.”
But then, looking at some comments here cheering suffering of others and passing judgement reminds me of the episode 'encounter at far point', maybe Q was right after all.
For the record: Nobody with a sane state of mind believes that the Russian people are “evil” or guilty of their leadership’s atrocities in Ukraine. They just happen to be the subjects of an authoritarian government and an onslaught of propaganda. At best, one could say that far too many are complicit and too few stand up to Putin. But admittedly, it’s a tough ask for people to protest a government that murders journalists and poisons opposition politicians.
