I'd also add that the very popular New King James Version (NKJV) is both copyrighted and uses different source material from the KJV which means that differences in wording are not just old to new English, but also differences in meaning.
taborj · 6 years ago
Good point, and I didn't know that about NKJV. Very interesting.

I wondered the same thing. Surely a useful API is for data that changes, and the recipient doesn't want to manage the content themselves? An API for searching static data seems only useful as a learning exercise.
taborj · 6 years ago
Or if said static data is a huge data set and unwieldy to maintain.

Or if that data is copyrighted, but allows free usage of small selections.

Copyrights didn’t exist when most were written (not many people use NIV versions) so what are you on about?
taborj · 6 years ago
> (not many people use NIV versions)

[citation needed]

NIV is always on the list of most popular bible versions, and is in heavy usage. KJV is by far the most popular, but NIV is still very popular.

Most people read KJV, which version are you trying to use where copyrights exist?
taborj · 6 years ago
NIV is a very popular version, and is copyrighted, as is NASB, ESV, etc.

Social Media is increasingly becoming a major source of power for political movements and political organization.

Both Obama and Trump campaigns were signified by a major online, social-media presence. I'd expect that many future Presidents will be determined by their command of Social Media.

Social Media is the new television, the new Radio. Its the new media that is most significantly consumed by the population.

By "not playing", you resign your power to others who take advantage of this new form of media.

taborj · 6 years ago
I disagree. By not playing, you're protecting yourself from future retribution, deserved or (more commonly) not. And not being on social media - or more precisely, not posting on social media - doesn't mean you're out of touch or lacking in influence. Not by a long shot.

I had a c64 and it was what made me fall in love with computers.

I tried my friends recently and it really did feel like a joy- it’s basically a toy now, impossible to use for anything meaningful (even IRC).

It’s hard to convey in text the “feeling” of immediacy and low input lag. I suppose it’s similar to how some gamers talk about fps, it feels immersive, like the machine is in-tune with you. It genuinely feels like something mechanical that you’re interacting with rather than something that “will get to it”.

It’s very subtle but it’s there.

taborj · 6 years ago
> impossible to use for anything meaningful

I would posit that our definition of 'meaningful' has dramatically changed since the C64 days. Nowadays, if you aren't doing it online or collaborating with someone, it's not considered 'meaningful.' Back in 1983, this was not the case.

I think a better comparison would be to do the things a C64 was good at on a modern computer with modern workflows, and see which is easier/faster/more satisfying. I'm talking word processing, gaming, printing, etc.

I bet the C64 wins.

(Side note: you can get that C64 online and onto IRC or a telnet-enabled BBS; there are plenty of products to do that)

Photography is one of those areas where devices don't go obsolete very quickly. With a good lens from 50 years ago I can still take an excellent photo on a digital camera from 15 years ago. Sure you won't have all the bells and whistles of the latest cameras and you'll sacrifice a few stops of dynamic range but for the average hobby photographer that doesn't really matter. The only customers who will upgrade every few years are professionals and Olympus hasn't had a huge offering for professionals. The micro four thirds standard is a great compromise between size and picture quality but it isn't what most professionals are looking for. They can use a phone for most of the things that an Olympus camera is good for and everyone these days already has a phone on them.

One market that hasn't been explored by camera manufacturers is software upgrades. I would pay a fair bit of money to get some of the latest computational photography features on my 5 year old camera.

taborj · 6 years ago
Yep. I throw 30-40 year old lenses on my 10 year old E-PL1 and go out and just have fun with photography. I never worry about taking it out on the beach, or on a boat, or any other place that cameras die. If it dies...I just pick up another one cheaply and continue having fun, and because I'm not as concerned about it, I take it places and get shots that others don't.

It's like having a beat up old 4x4 pickup. It gets the job done, and if you bang it up a bit in the process...oh well.

I got one better: i sank $2k into a full four thrids lens a while back (the f2.0 zoom; its still worth every penny). I've been wondering about finding a new sensor to put behind that, if i have to embrace the suck of adapters anyway, what should i be looking for now? Seems like "any Cannon" is the only sensible answer.
taborj · 6 years ago
Actually, this might be the time to pick up a fire-sale Olympus...

Is any cockpit audio removed from this?

It's pretty damn silent for two guys who are about to smash an airplane into a residential area.

taborj · 6 years ago
You're only hearing the transmissions they made (likely recorded via the ATC side). Any in-cockpit conversations/panic would not have been recorded, or at least not released.
