I’m the same way, VS Code is very hard for me to use. I quite literally don’t get what’s going on. I don’t know which is faster benchmark-wise, but I work much more efficiently in Atom and Sublime than VSC.

Same. Busy and slow, and I will never understand why it is the default these days.

As this becomes a bigger topic, I always wonder if there isn't an interesting technological solution to be had. Will there be a time in the future where we have satellite coverage of the globe, that has high-res real-time imagery? Could we attach cameras to Starlink satellites as an example? It seems like there would be a huge market for a service like this from governments and the like.

Seedlang | Full-stack Rails / React / React Native | Full-time | Remote/Berlin | https://www.seedlang.com

We are a video-based language learning website and app. You could think of us as the intersection between Duolingo and YouTube, all built around an Anki shell. Seedlang's content was created in collaboration with a well known German teacher on YouTube, the host of a channel called Easy German. The channel has almost 1 million subscribers, and so our site and app has a great distribution channel.

We are just starting to expand our development team, and are looking for people that are as obsessed with life-long learning as we are. You can learn more at: http://www.seedlang.com/jobs

Some Anki-like alternatives that people may like and not have seen (mostly focused on learning languages):

- Memrise - https://www.memrise.com/ - Has a very extensive selection of decks for language learning

- Supermemo - https://www.supermemo.com/en - Has a (disputed) claim that its algorithm beats Anki, various pre-made decks

- Drops - https://languagedrops.com/ - Mobile-only, has a higher reliance on pictures and audio over written translations.

You might also try my website (and soon to be app) Seedlang: http://www.seedlang.com. It is a site for learning German, and later this year Spanish, French, and English. It uses video flashcards to create different learning experiences, and ties them all together with a Anki-like review deck where any word or sentence encountered on the site can be saved.

I've found that the main difficulty in learning a new language is not so much in picking up structure, but vocabulary! This book seems to address the first, but not so much the second.

I happen to be learning German and Latvian right now. The way I'm approaching them is to find easy-level texts (https://www.nachrichtenleicht.de for German, children's books for Latvian), and reading a couple of paragraphs. Whenever I find a word I don't know, I use Google Translate, and add it to a custom Anki deck. Then I practice vocabulary every day.

This is a slightly more structured way of how I learned English back in the day (my English improved tremendously by playing Monkey Island, especially trying to understand the pirate insults).

I built a website (and soon an app) for learning German, that has a focus on both grammar and vocabulary. We have a frequency list with the top 5000 German words. And we are a video-driven site, so each word has a video. And most words also have sentences (also each with a video). This is good for getting a feel for the spoken language, and hearing the vocabulary used in context. You can check it out here: http://www.seedlang.com

I got existential:

I got existential:

Hi, here I am typing, what is the big deal. I can't even see what the progress is or what danger I might be in. What is the dsignifier of my danger? The typography is nice. But I don't know what my purpose is here. Is this a metaphor for life? What is my purpose, I won't know until the game is already over? How have I determined if I'm winning or losing? Who keeps score anyway? How many questions can I ask in one paragraph? Is this a self-interview or something? What I should have done is read more about this before I started. Maybe the goal is to get 500 words before the timer is over? At which point I have failed? And that's why so many people gave a count when they were posting on HN, it was just that in 5 minutes they were only able to manage 300 words? Could be. Could not be. That is a question meant to fill up space. And what is the point of filling up space if all that life is a kind of filling up of space. We dont' know if anything means anything, we might just be atoms floating around - or molecules floating around the universe. Star dust or whatever. But what is the point of this stardust sitting here typing for five minutes, only to find out if he's won or lost. I"m not on place to get 500 words, but is 500 words just a construct of my own mind? Did anyone even mention 500 words? What I had assumed was that as I typed there would be ever vanishing text that would sort of creep on my current progress, eventually overtaking it. And that would lead to a feeling of stress and turmoil. This doesn't feel stressful or full of turmoil at all, more of confusion. Ok, I just noticed that my cursor is red. Was it always red? Does it mean I'm running out of time? My guess is that it does mean something but that I'm overstating it's meaning. Well that's another metaphor. We run through life overstating meaning again and again, missing the things that are actually meaningful. Ok, my time is over. I think it's ove
