sumanthn commented on Setting Up an Ad-Blocking VPN with WireGuard and Pihole   drexl.me/guides/wireguard... · Posted by u/sethgecko

I setup PiHole and removed it about 2-3 days later. UBlock Origin is perfect for laptops, but I wanted to see if it'd block YouTube ads and similar on my Smart TV and mobile devices - it didn't. If anything it just caused me grief by interfering with non-ad web services, so I canned it and everything started working again.

I need UBlock Origin as a remote proxy.

Try adguard DNS, it's pretty good

Seemingly every other week for months now a Pihole post makes the front page on HN. Every time I wonder why. IMO, it's just a DNS black hole with a slick interface.

Before adblockers came along I had a script that updated my hosts file. I then moved to a DNS black hole but it’s been more than a decade since I’ve used either solution.

Do you people have that many hostile IoT / Smart thingies connected to your networks? Are you just unwilling to pay for the ad-free versions of apps. Are you using apps/services on these devices that don’t offer an ad-free option, if so why? I’m genuinely curious.

It's so ridiculous because instead of wasting money buying unnecessary hardware people could just use already existing DNS servers that do the same thing.

I block ads in my home because it's just a nicer web experience for everyone. Plus when I play games on my phone I don't get a barrage of ads every time I die.

Conference Youtube videos. They are a goldmine of useful tips and tricks. Go look for videos from the Node [1] and MongoDB [2] conferences and you will find tons of war stories and what is actually working for people. Using this option arguably connects you directly with some of the best people in the world who are actually using this stuff.

ps. using the youtube 2x playback speed option can really help digest lots of video content quickly [3]. I use this almost exclusively on youtube now.

Yep, seconding this.

https://www.infoq.com/ is my favorite because they get talks from some of the most experienced software dev folks, and they cover almost every topic of software engineering

The moment I didn't have to explain what we did anymore -- to anybody. Which happened remarkably fast. People would say "What do you do?" and I would say "Kickstarter!" and I would see their eyes just light up. It was very cool and exciting.

How long did it take from you joining Kickstarter to you realizing that you guys had picked up this kind of traction?

Do you have any funny/remarkable stories of the things you guys had to do in the early days when you were still trying to get your first customers/users?

Hi! This is Cassie. If you have questions/thoughts/recipes/doodles, I'm here to field all. (Pro-tip on the recipe front: peanut butter cookies are my #1, always seeking innovations.)

I guess i'll start. How did you end up getting hired by kickstarter?

Since we are generalizing, its worth mentioning the tendency of Gujratis (or most Indians) to be extremely insular and selfish:

"Trust and honesty remain essential to Gujarati-dominated industries. Mr Mehta, himself a Jain from Palanpur, whose diamond company has a turnover of $1.8 billion and offices from Antwerp to Tokyo, says that, despite the size of the business, it is still “all based on handshakes and words, with no contracts”. "

These people have traveled from Antwerp to Tokyo for 200 years...yet Palanpur is a shithole just like every other town in India. They have seen all the benefits of a free and modern society, but have not lifted a finger to bring 1% of those ideas to the town where they live.

Surat which processes 90% of the worlds diamonds is also a shithole. Its just yet another massive Indian city with no modern infrastructure, garbage and sewers everywhere, and had a plague outbreak about a decade ago!

While these globe trotters make millions which they stash, how much money do you think the rank and file of diamond polishers make? Do they have adequate health benefits and protection against problems like this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16201206

“We don’t have to deal with government too much, and mostly not with the banks, as most money comes from families,” says Dinesh Navadiya, the head of the Surat Diamond Association. “So there is little scope for corruption.”

No corruption...except massive tax avoidance. It is impossible to run the smallest business in India without running into corruption.

Some might argue these people have no obligation to improve society and that's Ok. But any article writing about the pros, should also write about the cons.

I have the feeling it might take another generation of Indians growing up in a global economy for them to realize the advantages of an uncorrupt and morally just society.

Theres still so much backwards cultural stigma thats prevalent in India that I think its just going to take a lot of time for Indians to realize what needs to be done.

I listen to a huge assortment of retrocomputing related podcasts (partial list here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8544576) using the podcast addict app.

tbh, I'm subscribed to far more than I can ever listen to, and I'm in my car for at least 2 hours a day. Right now, I'm addicted to the ANTIC podcast which features an almost impossible number of interviews with people from all over the early computer industry who experienced working for a fast growth startup, the bust that followed and the hand-off to an unexpected acquirer. It took a few episodes to get going, but it's very addictive now.

I'm pretty much convinced that there's a selection of podcasts for just about any interest. They act as an audio-only companion to my youtube subscriptions...and there's even a bit of overlap between the two communities.

Everything I listen to is very amateur/hobbyist produced (like most youtube videos) and it often shows, but the enthusiasm is often enough to pull me through.

I had completely ignored podcasts until about 3 years ago and started seriously getting into them a couple years ago. I've even got my parents hooked on a couple.

What i love about Podcast Addict is that it lets you listen to the episodes on fast forward. I'm subscribed to 127 podcasts currently and theres no way i can keep up to date with all of them, but the ones i do keep up to date with i can do so by listening to them at 2x speed.

Sometimes i can even get away with listening to them at 3x speed, depending on how fast the host talks.

I considered trying to start a service that hosted Ad-less podcasts. I figured I would get sued immediately.

I just skip the first 2-5 minutes of most podcasts and the last 1-3 minutes and pray they don't have ads in the middle.

sumanthn · 10 years ago
You dont own the podcast material, and you'd be taking away revenue from the owners. Not a suggested idea.

I've personally thought about a paid platform where users subscribe to the podcasts they like best and get the perk of avoiding ads since they're contributing to the podcasts creators
