> macOS 15 uses ~5GB on startup without any app open

Sort of? Mac very aggressively caches things into RAM. It should be using all of your RAM on startup. That's why they've changed the Activity Monitor to say "memory pressure" instead of something like "memory usage."

I'm typing this on an 8 GB MacBook Air and it works just fine. I've got ChatGPT, VSCode, XCode, Blender, and PrusaSlicer minimized and I'm not feeling any lag. If I open any of them it'll take half a second or so as they're loaded from swap, but when they're not in the foreground they're not using up any memory.

After several days of usage, Activity Monitor will usually shows that "WindowServer" is using 6 GB of RAM.

Yeah, 8 GB RAM does not cut it anymore. At least until Apple start fixing the memory leaks in MacOS.

Not just that but you can use Brightentosh to force it on.

I live in a sunny place with big windows and basically use it all day every day. When it turns off my screen feels broken I so prefer the brightness.

This is business as usual in Indonesia - even very expensive Dell computers came with FreeDOS instead of Windows.

An example = https://www.tokopedia.com/nescomputer/dell-poweredge-t440-xs...

No downvotes from me, but where do you think the free will lives? What mechanism produces it? What about that mechanism, if not purely stochastic, is not predictable? If free will can have a real measurable physical effect on this universe, then why can't it be isolated?

In some kind of quantum space probably.

We still don't know so much, yet we claim so much.

Didn’t see this in the article, do they have multi az redundancy? I.e. if the entire raid goes up in flames what’s the recovery process?

Corey Kosak here. A friend told me this was trending on Hacker News. Ask me anything LOL. Many of the people mentioned in the article are still around so I'll let them know this is happening. :-)

Hey, just want to say THANK YOU for empowering a lot of us - we created so many banners, flyers, etc for a lot of for-good activities.

When I first find out you can print a single desain over multiple pages (banners), my mind was blown. Me and my friends then went quite wild with it.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Was confused because everything moved in 2 seconds per frame on M2 Firefox.

Switched to Chrome - suddenly everything is butter smooth.

Congrats on an article very well done!

So many people missing the point then and now.

Blog was, is, the easiest way to showcase your skills and capabilities.

I'm unable to count how many times total strangers suddenly contacted me and proposes collaboration, projects, job, etc

That's why after 23 years, I'm still blogging.
