CRTs might tougher than we gave them credit for. I once dropped a Sony Trinitron from shoulder height when it hit a low ceiling. Didn't crack. Still worked. (And yes, this was at a LAN party.)

When I was a kid we threw out our old B&W tv. I wanted to smash the CRT but had heard that they could explode so from a distance I fired several .22 bullets at the screen. They had no effect. IIRC the screen wasn't damaged at all? I can hardly believe what I'm writing but it was true

(canola oil i think is what americans might know it as. or something similar)
stormdennis · a month ago
Yes, with the 'can' in canola being the first 3 letters of Canada. They though up the name as they reckoned the name rapeseed was problematic from a marketing point of view. I've heard that like all oils that require extensive processing canola/rapeseed oil is not good for you as it contains the wrong sort of fatty acids as a result of that processing. Olive oil, lard, butter, coconut and ghee are all far healthier.

Yes, please! To me it feels like 90% of road works I pass actually has nobody there working at all. Some go on for years it seems.

Another option is what they do in Japan - just get 10X the number of people on it, with all the tools for the entire job and then do it all overnight.

Also, nice to see good old "dude with shovel" in there, a tool that would have looked the same back in the 19th century.

Where I live it goes crazy with road works when it's coming to the end of the year with the council trying to spend the unused budget rather than lose it.

I don't know how to articulate it, but I could never do anything like this.

The ability to organize one's life like this is so foreign to me, it's almost like he's describing what it's like to be an octopus.

I think it may be my emotional state that I can't manage. There is absolutely no way, I could decide what I'd be doing the next day every night. The thing is my state of mind would prevent me from doing half the tasks in the list. So shit would just pile up in that text file, making me every day more nervous about things.

For what it's worth, I think I am more "normal" than the person who wrote that piece. So that's a consolation...

My sister is far far richer and more successful than I am. She once told me that every night the last thing she'd do was to make a mental list of things to do tomorrow. That was it. Nothing written down.

I’ve recently gotten very into NTP with GPS and PPS as a fun personal project. Just a couple weeks ago I was reading about him on Wikipedia and I could relate to this quote (as no one else I’ve talked to about PPS has shown any interest):

> he enjoyed working on synchronized time because no one else was working on it, giving him his own "little fief"

Debian recently switched to NTPSec, and I was happy to see how familiar their website style was to the main NTP site. In the FAQ I found:

> [Q] Why do these web pages look so 1990s

> [A] Because that simple look is good for people with visual impairments, and as a tribute to Dr. David Mills, the original architect of NTP who is himself visually impaired. Dr. Mills has very particular ideas about Web visuals, and this site is carefully styled to resemble his NTP documentation pages.

I’ve never had an opportunity to meet him, but he has certainly made a positive impact on my life. Rest in peace Dr. Mills.

Did you actually read the article? " ... The issue is subject to much controversy, with some historians asserting that it was defensive, while other historians assert that the plan aimed at the expulsion, sometimes called an ethnic cleansing, on the grounds that this was an integral part of a planned strategy."

"Other historians assert... " is hardly an evidence. More like an opinion. In truth, Israel today has more than 2 million Arab citizens.

stormdennis · 2 years ago
I've read books on it. The 2 million Arabs are the descendants of the 20% of Palestinians who were internally rather than externally displaced, ie the ethnic cleansing was only 80% effective.
