I been using these mini pan frying skillets for years for prototype boards. <$2. An IR thermometer with a laser is handy during the process.

And here is the cheap hot air rework station I use. <$15

You can even opt out of the stencil but I never do cuz it's much easier than not having it.

Haha I've got an old toaster oven, it works wonders for basic prototype assembly!

Alternative way to see it: The author had either a $50 solution, or a $50 solution that comes with a discounted hotair rework station for $150…

I learned it from Superfastmatt. He needed a piece of plastic that retails for $1500 for his van, so he said: “either I have a $1500 solution or I have a $1500 solution but I get a free fancy 3D printer in the end…” that stuck with me.

Haha yeah, last year I replaced my wheel bearings in my van. I ended up with a frustrating ABS code (long story short: faulty magnetic encoders on both of the new bearings). I ended up spending about the same as the job would have cost at a shop, but with a slew of new tools.

I also did a USB switch project for fun, and ended up spending probably $250 for something I could have just bought for $15, but it was a great experience. (Here if anyone is interested: https://shielddigitaldesign.com/posts/2021/susb/ )

"Balking at the $50+ charge for turnkey assembly, I opted to take the financially responsible route and pay $200+ for a hot-air rework station to solder it myself."

Yeah, I feel this :)

Came here to check if this was the case, I'm seeing issues on the Android application. Thank you for confirming that it's not just me!

> I see them in pristine condition on city streets hauling a totality of one human.

It’s about having one vehicle that can do it all. Maybe you’re noticing when there’s one human but you don’t really know how else that person is using the vehicle at other times. Trucks can haul people, things, do road trips, etc. pretty well.

The other day, I was just remarking how my minivan makes a better pickup than most pickups for most tasks. For years I've wanted to get another truck (had an old Dakota that I had to sell when kid #3 was on the way). Practicality reigns, though, and I'm extremely satisfied with the usability of the van.

Sparkfun should take it upon themselves to correct the centuries-old mix-up of "conventional current" next :)

I always thought this was really interesting. The Coast Guard's Electrician's Mate training program taught electron-flow theory, so it was tough to switch my brain to hole-flow theory when I went to college. Technically the math is the same but man it threw me off with schematics.

Dealership near me has got some 2024-25 model Mitsubishis for like 19k new. They look pretty sweet.

I'm assuming this is the Mirage, which is one of the cars we own for the family (the other is an old Odyssey to fit all the kids). The Mirage is an absolute joy to own: its simple 3cyl engine gets 50mpg if I'm careful. We live in a very rural area (i.e. walking and biking for a big family is impossible and dangerous), so having something economical to drive is a huge help. We drive it any time we aren't taking the whole family somewhere!

Of course in the article, I see the Mirage is noted as discontinued. How frustrating.

In case there are readers who don't know who Clifford Stoll is, he's the author of The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage, that was practically required reading if you were a programmer or hacker in the early 1990s.

I didn't understand how hijacking worked on Amazon until I read this lucid explanation. Clearly he's still a great writer.

He's on Hacker News as CliffStoll. This makes me wonder how Hacker News deals with someone registering a famous person's name if they are not that person? I'm guessing that it's not a big problem here on HN because there's nothing being sold.

This is amazing. I was literally reading the 3rd chapter of the book "Machine Beauty" in bed, saw the baby Clifford Stoll mentioned and looked it up because it sounded familiar. Of course I've seen the beautiful glass bottles here on HN before, so I went back to my book. After putting it down and hopping on HN, of course I see an article referencing this exact topic! Such a small world.

I'm in no way qualified to comment on the details of the issue outlined here (though I did get stuck babysitting a friend's kids for many extra hours due to a 6hr delay on said friend's flight into EWR a few weeks ago). For anyone who lives far enough north and west of EWR though, I highly recommend trying either the Allentown or Scranton/Wilkes-Barre airports. I've moved my business travel to Scranton 100% and have been loving it. There are more restrictions on flight times, and basically everything needs a connection, but it more than makes up for any time I would have lost due to sinkhole traffic on I-80 and the EWR parking shuttles. It's amazing to park and be at the security line basically 3 minutes later.

>> FWIW, what I want most in Solvespace is a way to do chamfers and fillets.

I've outlined a function for that and started to write the code. At a high level it's straight forward, but the details are complex. It'll probably be a year before it's done.

>> And a way to define parameters (not sure if that's already possible).

This is an active work in progress. A demo was made years ago, but it's buggy and incomplete. We've been working out the details on how to make it work. I hope to get the units issue dealt with this week. Then the relation constraints can be re-integrated on top - that's the feature where you can type arbitrary equations on the sketch using named parameters (variables). I'd like that to be done this year if not this summer.

While I second the same request, I'm also incredibly grateful for Solvespace as a tool. It's my favorite MCAD program, and I always reach for it before any others. Thank you for your work on it!
