The anti trans, trans DJ at the start sort of epitomizes the entire self hating vibe of most of the people profiled in this piece. Large contradictions in belief where it suits them to ignore the facts, this is unavoidably political but these all seem like prime GOP/Reform or farther right voter base with hatred of the other as the root belief.

I had to go lookup what it was, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGA_cooker Apparently it’s a stove/range that is always on.

I would love to know how the blind guy who invented it did his day to day work of tinkering. The Wikipedia entry just says he made it but it seems like a big deal to do that when he did.

Sure, f you trust the administration to rely on objective standards rather than making arbitrary and capricious decisions at scale. Looking at social media, I see a lot of people (including GOP county chairs, example below) saying things like 'deport them all, let them reapply for re-entry,' which kinda proves the argument that it was never about illegal immigration in the first place.

It's certainly to be some sort of political litmus test with a quick perusal of social media for anything other than rabid Trump support along with a test for darker tone of skin or country of origin that is out of favor, to bulk up their failure to kick out enough migrants (not coming close to their stated goals of 1000s per day) through the means they have used so far with fake justification, ticky tacky legal and paperwork issues used to justify deportation.

> almost triple the age of our sun.

In this insanely hypothetical scenario, would it be possible to see a sun before our sun? (In the same galactic vicinity)

stevenwoo · 15 days ago
I was under the impression that our sun is not large enough to form the heavier elements on earth and this means supernova or collision of neutron stars had to be responsible for creating these elements, some of the stuff flying off this explosion formed our solar system, so we could see those progenitor stars.

I don’t really understand why so much of science is funded by the government instead of by private philanthropy. It seems like an obvious channel for corruption of science. Sure private donors have interest driven motives too but it would be diffuse across many areas not concentrated like a political party’s interests.

There's a half hour explanation of how the government funding of science research became a thing in the USA. https://www.npr.org/2025/05/28/1253247256/-higher-education-...

All the progressive solutions seem to only not work, but exacerbate the problem and expose the public to more risk. Not to mention all the sympathy and gentle parenting the problem under the masquerade of tolerance just keeps the homeless in their addictions and spirals while those that dictate policies can get away with doing nothing and live in their secure buildings and escorted by private cars and security so as to never look at the problem. The lack of authority on the matter leaves it to random citizens to deal with, sometimes with deadly or legal consequences when its mishandled instead of being handled appropriately by trained law enforcement or social workers. Sadly, the past solution was more humane than the current ones when you look purely at the end results.

FYI, a small state had great success in recent years, though this story is ten years old, have not seen any updates. They simply gave housing to the homeless as the first step. I do not think anyone would call Utah progressive.

Let me put it this way: my axiom is aimed at people (like me) who read popular science books, skim the textbooks, and think there might be a way to make a time machine or if not that then “at least something interesting” of a similar nature.

If you have a graduate degree in quantum mechanics or work for Intel as a designer/engineer of microprocessors then yeah, you can consider yourself exempt.

I read this after someone recommended it here, you may enjoy it: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/612737/how-to-make-...

The title is inspired by that Carl Sagan quote from Cosmos, and the science is understandable for the most part by laypeople. There are science parts towards the end that I had to read a couple of times because it's just so unintuitive.

> If this is the case, then two possibilities follow: first that its intentions are entirely benign and second they are malign

Even framing this objects actions using human concepts (benign, malign) is very short sighted. It’s possible any alien life experiences complexities were fundamentally unable to comprehend (there’s some good sci fi short stories that explore this).

Sort of the impetus (which at least gives us a reason unlike the movie adaptation Edge of Tomorrow but is not as important as the impact) in the novella All You Need is Kill.

I’m talking about building sexy things like ansibles or FTL engines. The kinds of transcendent ambitions that Quantum Mechanics often inspire in laypeople like me.
stevenwoo · 24 days ago
Every device one has that has integrated circuits (chips) and some of the discrete components was designed based on the quantum mechanical properties of materials that were beyond us until we understood quantum mechanics - sometimes we get too accustomed to the wonder right in front of us. The Electrical Engineering curriculum at my university started with Quantum Electrodynamics for a semester. Figuring out how the sun and stars work required an understanding of the smallest particles, it's all kind of amazing.

This is great news! Why doesn't fish and game just increase the number of elk tags they sell? There are multiple ways to reduce the elk population.
stevenwoo · a month ago
There are other studies that show that reintroduction of wolves also appeared to lead to a decrease in coyotes and changed the populations and behaviors of other prey animals, in turn changing other plant populations. This particular headline does not indicate all the apparent changes. These second and third order effects are not things a state fish and game body would particularly care about until it was forced to by other arms of government.
