Free Staff? Is there another term for this that's proper and also doesn't imply compensation?
stevehb · 4 years ago
Is the word you're looking for "volunteer"?

What is this bizarre URL?

Their site is http://tttthis.com

I remember it because I sometimes try to find it. I quite liked a post of theirs called "Remember websites" or something to that effect.

> And yet, 90% of my interactions with Python via the CLI involve it crashing because the version that the current thing I'm trying to compile or execute wants isn't the one the OS happens to be vending for it.

Do python releases introduce backwards-incompatible changes (ignoring the 2.x/3.x divide)? Would it not be as simple has making sure you have the latest runtime?

stevehb · 5 years ago
Even after the 2.x/3.x debacle, it's not as simple as keeping everything current. For example, until very recently, Tensorflow would work on Python 3.7 but not on 3.8. TF is just one well-known example, but version incompatibilities are common enough that many Python devs keep multiple virtual envs.

Well, if you remove all iOS versions with <3.42% penetration, then you should remove the same from the Android table and use 2 decimals for Android like for iOS.

https://i.imgur.com/0Ar0ta5.png

My point being: there ARE other iOS versions in use. I have a backup working iPhone 4 turned on right now. It won't upgrade beyond iOS 5 (I think it's iOS 5). But somehow the author ignores all those 0.1% iOS versions, yet shows them for Android (with 4 decimals no less).

stevehb · 6 years ago
That's a good point. The list for Android fragmentation even includes 2.0 Eclair, which has 0% across the whole row!

So much for the World Wide Web.

Someone give me back the web 1.0 before 2000, please.

It's not blocked here in Taiwan. I wonder if they're blocking it because of the GDPR?

It's called abstraction for a reason. Do you write your system code from scratch each time?
stevehb · 7 years ago
It's called abstraction, but at some point that becomes a euphemism for obfuscation.

You're being downvoted, but it is pretty bad. Looks like they set word breaks to 'break-all' for those low-width media queries.

From your original post:

> Vapor cloud detonation has never been considered particularly likely, and never documented as far as I know

This is an example of a vapor cloud detonation. I'm just pointing out that it's happened, so I'm not sure why you're saying it's never been documented. Unless you just meant in the context of a tanker, but that's not how you phrased it.

As it happened, I lived in the area at the time (about 40 miles away on the back side of Cypress, Texas). I didn't think so much about it being an earthquake, but instead thought a large airplane had crashed nearby. I ran out into the street expecting to see fire and explosions and whatnot within a block or few of my house ... only for there to be _nothing._

I hope you guys have lots of success, we really need more options for linux on a laptop.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I really want a 13 inch laptop thats thin/ultrabook format, with low specs and only a HD screen. All I do each day is use a browser and SSH into other machines, I don't need an i5/i7 processor and HiDPI display to do that.

My ideal laptop would be an XPS 13 sized laptop, with a 1080p screen, i3 processor, 8GB of RAM and as much battery life increases as possible.

stevehb · 8 years ago
If you're looking for 13 inch, standard HD screen with long battery life, and all you need is browser and SSH functionality, you might think about trying a Chromebook. The SSH functionality comes as a Google-made extension [1]. The CPU and RAM specs are usually lower than you mention, but in my experience the machine runs fine for video calls, Netflix, etc.

When did The Guardian or the South China Morning Post vet anything with the US government?
stevehb · 9 years ago
The Guardian ran everything by the US government first before publishing. Every responsible journalist does. They're looking for a response or comment to the story, to make sure they didn't get anything wrong, and to see if there's a any reason to withhold details (a reason beyond "It's classified so don't").

In fact, in Greenwald's book No Place to Hide, he describes how they held off publishing for several days while waiting for a response from the government. Greenwald was so frustrated with the delays that he considered quitting the Guardian and going on his own. I think that's the idea that eventually turned into The Intercept.
