I think it's the right strategy for Apple.

They're not a model company. The risks of deploying something half-baked to their users is unacceptable. They're taking it slow and trying to do it in a way that doesn't damage/erode their brand.

Wait it out, let the best model(s) rise to the surface (and the hallucination problems to get sufficiently mitigated), and then either partner with a proprietary provider or deploy one of the open source models. Makes more sense than burning billions of dollars training a new foundation model

Exactly. Another mobile.me moment that adversely impacts customers is worse than making something useful that works. Anyone that “needs” AI can use an app.

Did they mention availability of the model for users?
steve-atx-7600 · 2 months ago
It’s available in the US at least in the ios X app. Can’t see it in the grok app and don’t seen an upgrade for that app yet.

Seems like they should focus on creating a reason that I would need their search instead of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok etc. Already dropped the 20$/month subscription; not sure why I’d need it.

"We wanna get data, even outside the app to better understand you," [...] "What are the things you’re buying, which hotels are you going [to], which restaurants are you going to, what are you spending time browsing, tells us so much more about you."

Good luck with that. Chrome on steroids.

Quote is from perplexity's CEO in case it isn’t obvious.

Imagine if such a misaligned AI had control of robots and could affect the real world? It could decide to act on its misalignment in a more harmful was than just a few X posts.

Don’t worry, they’ll make sure this doesn’t happen by emphasizing important points in the prompt with all caps.

Seems like it could be new design fad. Noticed that the info panel on the bottom of an MLB baseball game was translucent. Then, noticed that the bottom button panel on the iPhone X app is also translucent.

But why put an AR interface on an non AR hardware?
steve-atx-7600 · 2 months ago
Exactly. Make iPhone text and buttons hard to understand for some potential new AR tech that people actually use???

> I’m autistic, but this won’t only affect autistic people. A lot of people are going to have problems with this. I hope there’s a very prominent way to turn it off.

How can that possibly be? Didn't he say it will: "bring joy and delight to _every_ user experience"

That means YOU as well. No way he could over-selling something. Inconceivable.

Apple has historically been above average in terms of considering usability. So, I think seeing this new design as being asinine is not an unexpected opinion.

To me it looks plain ugly, especially with all the bounces and transforms. Look at those sliders and toggles..

It's straight from the 2000s, with Linux users using Compiz and... Amethyst(?), stuffing their entire desktop full with gaudy transparency, transforms, jiggles and bounces.

More of a nit, but the sentence

The new design extends across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26 to establish even more harmony
is so ironic and funny. No one noticed how talking about "harmony" whilst having one single platform use a codename next to the version number just screams inattention to detail?

Thought you guys were just being whiney until I looked at the linked “beautiful new design” page and saw the screen shots they selected. Literally gives me a headache to look at the first sample and I am one of the people that miss the candy coated look of early OS X.
