starmftronajoll commented on Philadelphia Transit System Votes to Cut Service by 45%, Hike Fares   bloomberg.com/news/articl... · Posted by u/petethomas

The last two paragraphs provide relevant context (as is often the case in news articles), which makes clear that this is another step in a series of political maneuvers, so wait and see how this pans out. The vote means service is "set to" be cut, but in the immediate term, it's SEPTA pulling a lever to put pressure on state lawmakers who are already negotiating a financial package for transit.

> “This is a vote none of us wanted to take,” SEPTA Board Chair Kenneth Lawrence Jr. said. “To be clear, this does not have to happen — if state lawmakers can reach an agreement to deliver sufficient, new funding for public transit.”

> Earlier this year, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro proposed a $300 million mass transit bill to help fund the system that was passed by the state House of Representatives on June 17. Negotiations on the bill are still underway.

After the shutdown of Dark Sky, I switched to Carrot, which added a layout that mimics Dark Sky's design (the layout option is called "Anubis" in the Carrot app). I've found it to be a largely seamless replacement.

Backgammon had a pretty large community at Yahoo! Games. With the demise of Yahoo! Games the only place to play online was FIBS, for which you had to download a Java client... Glad that finally someone scratched their own itch and built this, I will check it out and suggest it to my father.

I’ve played for a long time at BG Galaxy, judging by online backgammon forums (and activity on BGG itself), it’s a pretty popular place to play.

Edit: Hey tslocum, rather than downvoting anyone who mentions other sites where people can play backgammon, I’d love for you to tell us more about why you believe your site is or will become superior to the existing options. There’s room for improvement in this space, but you’re definitely not there yet.

OK, I’ll bite: why?

I don’t know who Ben Collins is and at a first read of his bio I’m not really sure who would. My first instinct is that this is one of those terminally online things, like how I kept reading references to “Taylor Lorenz” as if she were the devil incarnate and when I finally looked into it she was just another pretty boring journalist.

starmftronajoll · 2 years ago
Since you asked, a genuine answer. I suspect it's because Ben Collins is a veteran of the left-wing "disinformation" beat, most recently for MSNBC until he lost that gig -- so the admittedly cryptic parent comment is positing that as a seasoned culture warrior, Collins will likely apply The Onion as a tool in the culture war.

The Onion's comedic point-of-view used to be less predictable, but as the culture war as progressed, so too has The Onion's voice, and it's a more reliable voice for the left these days. If you rue that trend, for whatever reason, Collins provides little reason to imagine things will change.

Any chance we can get the title modified to read "Schiphol airport ..." as many won't know if this is a company, a town, or what until paragraph 4 of the press release?
starmftronajoll · 2 years ago
I'm with you! I thought it was a town for most of the release. I didn't know what "airside" meant either, pardon my ignorance. I've never encountered that word in American English.
starmftronajoll commented on The appendix is not, in fact, useless   npr.org/sections/health-s... · Posted by u/Digit-Al

In support of your scepticism I have to say there is something I'm always missing in these discussions about the alleged function of the appendix. That thing that I'm missing is a straightforward description of what are the consequences of patients losing these functions after an appendectomy. Surely there is more than enough population over which to do a case-study observational analysis? So, where is it? What happens to the immunity or gut flora of people who have had their appendices removed? Anything?
starmftronajoll · 2 years ago
The article touches on this:

> Studies have shown that infections with the really bad, nasty bacteria C. diff tend to be higher in people who have had their appendix removed.

You are both right, in that they were counterculture. However:

> comedians are supposed to be subversive

No, that's just your preference. Jay Leno and Norm MacDonald are not subversive at all; just funny. Most of the Smothers' comedy was family-friendly, but they did push a few buttons sometimes.

> I hope you talk in a more informed way about time you know

Totally unwarranted.

starmftronajoll · 2 years ago
Leno, sure, but Norm Macdonald is one of the most subversive comics of my lifetime. A few hours perusing the archives of “I’m Not Norm” on YouTube is time well spent!
